Department of Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics

The Department of Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics, Vivekanandha Dental College for Women had conducted the Continuing Dental Education program on “Conservative Dentistry - In & Out!” on 11th January 2017, at the college auditorium. The program was conducted to enlighten the undergraduate students and post graduates on problems solving in endodontic procedures and an innovative technique to restore the tooth with light cure composite and glass ionomer cement (Sandwich technique). This academic event was awarded 3 credit points by the centre for CME Accreditation, the Tamil Nadu Dr.MGR Medical University. Around 200 delegates participated in this program.

The program started with the formal inaugural function at 1 pm. The welcome address was delivered by Dr. Vaiyapuri Ravi and he introduced the speaker to the audience. The speakers were felicitated with a small token of love, a memento from organizers to the guest speakers by Dr.S.Venkatraman and Dr. Rajkumar Daniel.

Dr. N. S. Mohan Kumar, Professor, J.K.K. Nataraja Dental College, Komarapalayam delivered a lecture on “Problem Solving in Endodontics”. This was followed by Dr.N.Jayaprakash, Senior Lecturer, J.K.K. Nataraja Dental College, Komarapalayam who delivered his lecture on “A Love Story – (Sandwich Technique)”.

Finally the CDE program was concluded with the Vote of Thanks delivered by Dr. P.V.Syamala and with National Anthem

Tips for Successful Dental Practice

Department of Public Health Dentistry

The Department of Public Health Dentistry in collaboration with Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, Vivekanandha Dental College for Women has conducted a Continuing Dental Education Programme on "Tips for successful Dental Practice” on 28th February 2017 at the College Auditorium.

The programme was conducted to create awareness on the management of common problems in dental practice and the importance of biopsy in oral tissues among the Post graduates and Undergraduate students. This academic event was awarded with 10 Credit points in Category II by the centre for CME Accreditation Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University. Around 400 participants including Faculties, Postgraduates and Undergraduates participated in this Programme.

The programme began with the formal Inaugural function at 9.15 am with the Prayer song. The welcome address was given by the Dr. S. Lalithambigai. The Vice Principal Dr.Balan welcomed the Chief Guest, Dr. S. Shivanandha , MDS delivered the speech on Management of Common Problems in Dental Practice. He spoke on the various methods of managing the common dental problems which are ignored most of the times. He also insisted that, the negligence of the common problems at the earliest would be turned into major disease.

It was followed by Dr. M.Shivakumar. MDS delivered his talk on “Promoting oral health among rural population”. He emphasized the promotion of oral health for all group of people especially focusing on rural population.

This was followed by Dr. G.D.Vidya MDS, spoke on “Importance of biopsy in oral diagnosis”. She explained comprehensively the various techniques and their importance in oral biopsy preparation.

The final speaker of the day was Dr. N. Ganapathi MDS who delivered his talk on “Diagnostic aids in dental practice”. He explained in detail about the advanced diagnostic aids and their implications in dentistry.

Finally, the CDE was concluded with the Vote of thanks & with National Anthem..

Digital Dental Photography

Department of Orthodontics and DentofacialOrthopaedics

Department of Orthodontics and DentofacialOrthopaedics, Vivekanandha Dental College for Women conducted a Continuing Dental Education Workshop Progamme on DENTA PIXEL – Digital Dental Photography on the 22nd March 2017 at the College auditorium with the intention of enabling the participants to learn how to take a good clinical photograph which is an essential diagnostic aid. This academic event was accredited with 4 CDE credit points by our Tamil Nadu State Dental Council. Around 98 delegates from various colleges participated in this programme.

The programme began invoking God’s blessings and lighting of Kuthuvizhaku by the Guest Speaker and various Head of the Departments at 9.30 am.

The Welcome address was delivered by Dr. S Nagalakshmi M.D.S., Professor and Head , Department of Orthodontics and DentofacialOrthopaedics.

The Guest Speaker, Dr. A. V Arun was introduced to the gathering by Dr. K R Ramesh Kumar, Reader, Department of Orthodontics and was felicitated.

The first session was on the Basic principles of Photography which lasted for about an hour followed by tea break.

The second session was Clinical Dental Photography which lasted for more than one hour followed by a questionnaire session where the participants cleared their doubts a about Dental Photography.

The morning session was concluded with the vote of thanks by Dr. B KRajkumar, Professor, Department of Orthodontics.

The morning session ended with the National Anthem followed by lunch.

The afternoon session which was a demo and hands on workshop, conducted in the Department of Orthodontics , VDCW, where the delegates were divided into 10 batches

The program was indeed very useful to the undergraduates and the postgraduates which paved way for enhancing the photography skills and helping them to render a good clinical photograph. This CDE was welcomed by all, as this was a good start to get to know about taking good clinical pictures. Delegates from other colleges also attended the programme. Certificates were distributed to the participants of the CDE programme.

Management of Medical Emergencies

Department of Prosthodontics, Crown and Bridge

Department of Pedodontics and preventive dentistry, Vivekanandha Dental College for Women has conducted a Continuing Dental Education workshop Programme on “Medical Emergencies in Dental Practice and Workshop on Basic Life Support” on 23rd March 2017 at the College Auditorium. The programme was conducted to provide an overview of the most common emergencies that maybe encountered in a dental practice and also provide with an outline of the management principles involved among the Post graduates and Undergraduate students. This academic event was accredited with 5 Credit points by our Tamil Nadu Dr.MGR Medical University. Around 350 delegates participated in this Programme.

The programme began with the formal Inaugural function at 9.15AM with Dr. M. Gowthaman M.D.S., presiding over the function.

The welcome address and chief guest introduction was given by Dr. V. Mahesh Mathian, M.D.S, Prof and Head of the Department.

The Principal Dr.(Capt).S.Gokulnathan, B.Sc., MDS, welcomed the chief guest Dr. Kannan Balaraman, MDS FDS and delivered the inaugural address

The speaker of the day was Dr. Kannan Balaraman, MDS FDS, who delivered lecture on "Management of Medical Emergencies in Dental Practice”

The lecture highlights about the basic skills required while dealing with the situation, timing and indications of the need of BLS and it was succeeded with hands-on demonstration by Dr. Kannan Balaraman, MDS FDS (Department of Plastic Surgeon, Ganga Hospital, Coimbatore)

Dr. S. Vinodh M.D.S., delivered Vote of thanks and the programme was over after National Anthem.

Research Methodology

Departments of Basic Medical Sciences

Departments of Basic Medical Sciences, Vivekanandha Dental College for Women has conducted a Continuing Dental Education programme of workshop on “Research Methodology” on 6th & 7th April 2017 at the College Auditorium. The programme was conducted to provide a set of skills and potentiality to undertake the research effectively in the disciplines of Dental science and to turn completed research into high quality publishable material in the form of articles to the young research scholars and Postgraduates. This academic event was scheduled for two days and accredited with 20 Credit points by our Tamil Nadu Dr.MGR Medical University. 54 delegates were participated in this Programme.

The programme began with the formal Inaugural function at 9.15 am. The Welcome address was delivered by Dr. Elanchezhiyan and the Inaugural address was given by CDE Convenor, Dr. G. Purushothaman.

The Vice Principal, Dr. N.Balan, M.D.S., welcomed the chief guest Dr. P. Ganeshkumar MD Scientist C, NIE (ICMR), Chennai.

Our Guest speaker Dr. P. Ganeshkumar addressed the gathering and emphasized the importance of research and he also stressed on proper understanding of research.

Summary of Sessions Day 1 (6th April 2017)

The first speaker of the first day session was Dr. Sachu Phillip, Professor & HOD of Biochemistry, VDCW who delivered her lecture on “Introduction to Research Methodology”. She mentioned that Research Methodology is often a challenging subject for both faculty and students. She has discussed the basics of Research methodology and she also mentioned the importance of this workshop for the research scholar and academic community.

This was followed by Dr. M. Shivakumar M.D.S., Professor & HOD of Public Health Dentistry, VDCW who delivered his lecture on “Formulation of Hypothesis”. He started the session by giving a comprehensive view about Research hypothesis, types, criteria, characteristics of hypothesis testing. He explained briefly about testing the hypothesis and deliberate the hypothesis with proper understanding by an activity.

The post lunch session was handled by Dr. L. Radhakrishnan, Reader, Department of Pharmacology, VDCW on “Review of Literature & Study Design”. He gave an overview about Literature review/Problem Identification: Sources and Criteria. The session applied more focus on how to reviewing the literature and find the which is a critical part and gap in the research process.

In continuation of this session next lecture was given by Dr. S. Nagalakshmi, Professor & HOD, Dept of Orthodontics, VDCW on “Thesis Writing”. She explained the constraint faced in writing a thesis and protocol. The speaker explained the points to be carried out while writing thesis and research proposal, later it was summarized once again to the participants.

Summary of Sessions Day 2 (7th April 2017)

The first session of the second day programme was delivered by Dr. S. Nagalakshmi on “Article Presentation”. The speaker began with a technical aspect of writing Citations and referencing that every researcher needs to know. She clearly conveyed her message to the participants how to write the format that must be followed in citing a book, journal, article, websites, case studies, reports, international and national documents and periodicals, single author to many others through Vancouver style of citation. She explained about Zotero software for making a bibliography and simple methods in adding reference.

Dr. Maheswaran, Reader, Dept of Oral Biology delivered his lecture on “Plagiarism”. He started his session with giving a definition of plagiarism and he explained about the tools which are used to avoid plagiarism. He also explained about the use of the plagiarism prevention software.

Dr. G. Purushothaman, Reader, Department of Physiology, VDCW spoke about “Sample Size determination”. He explained about sampling process of research, sampling Errors and the steps to be undertaken while pursuing research. The session applied more focus on sampling design which is a critical part in the research process. Conceptual facts related to sampling techniques and its classification into probability and non-probability sampling were clarified. Biases associated with determining sample design were explained and discussed in detail.

In continuation to this topic, the next session was carried out by Dr. Sathyanarayanan, Professor & HOD of Anatomy, VDCW on “Ethics in Research”. The facilitator began by posing question what do you know about “Ethics in research”? After the collection of respondents views speakers deliberates the unethical practices ongoing in research scenario. He also facilitate the ways how research can be to harmful by providing situation and live example

The last session of the programme was handled by Dr. P. GaneshKumar, Scientist C, NIE (ICMR), Chennai. The speaker introduced participants to about the basic concepts used to handle SPSS software and briefed upon its utility along with a comparison with Ms Excel’s Data. He also provided the conceptual knowledge about how to test a probability of sample, hypothesis and parametric testing, Type I and Type II error in a brief. Speaker explained about a normal distribution curve and importance the x and y axis that it formed and invited examples from the participants and explained them. The highlight of the programme was hands on training on SPSS 16 software (free Version) which was installed in participants own Laptop and each individual had the experience of handling the basics and few advanced techniques in SPSS.

Publish and Cherish

Department of Orthodontics & Dentofacial Orthopedics

The Department of Orthodontics & Dentofacial Orthopedics, Vivekanandha Dental College for Women has conducted CDE programme on “Publish and Cherish” on 12th April 2016 at the College Auditorium.

The programme was conducted to create awareness on publication which is a part of curriculum during Postgraduation. All Postgraduates and staff participated in this programme.

This programme was started with the formal Inaugural function at 10 am with the Principal presiding over the function.

The Vice Principal welcomed the Chief Guest, Dr. G. J. Anbuselvan, He stressed the importance of publications and its vital role in Dental Education.

Finally, the Programme was concluded with the Vote of thanks proposed by Dr. Ganapathy, Prof & HOD of Oral Pathology.

Management of Cleft Lip and Palate

Department of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopaedics, Vivekanandha Dental College for Women conducted a Continuing Dental Education Programme on Management of Cleft Lip and Palate on the 14th July 2017 at the college auditorium. This programme gave us an insight of how well to manage these patients. This academic event was accredited with 4 CDE credit points by our Tamil Nadu State Dental Council. 101 delegates participated in this programme.

The programme was presided by the Principal, Dr. (Capt) S. Gokulanathan and it began invoking God’s blessings with a prayer song at 9.15am.The welcome address was delivered by Prof. Dr. S Nagalakshmi, Head of the Department.

The Guest Speaker Prof. Dr. Dhivakar Selvaraj was introduced to the gathering by Dr. S. Vinoth, Reader, Department of Orthodontics.

The first session walked through the basics i.e. the etiology, incidence and other aspects of Cleft lip and Palate followed by Tea Break.

The second session continued afresh covering the interdisciplinary approach of Cleft lip and Palate patients followed by lunch. This session clearly enlightened us about the protocol of treatment followed as the age progresses.

The third session was a live demo and hands on workshop on Nasoalveolar moulding and the fourth session continued with a lecture on Orthognathic surgeries associated with Cleft lip and Palate as multiple surgeries may be required for an individual patient.

Certificates were distributed to the participants and the programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Prof Dr. B K Rajkumar, Department of Orthodontics, followed by National anthem.

The programme was beneficial as the participants got to know the different protocols in treating a Cleft Lip and Palate patient.

Publication Strategies

Department of Physiology and General Pathology

The Department of Physiology in collaboration with General Pathology of Basic Medical Sciences, Vivekananda Dental College for Women has conducted Seminar on Publication Strategies at VDCW auditorium on 27.09.2017. The program was started with formal Inaugural session began at 10.30 AM after registration of the Delegates.

The welcome address was delivered by Dr. S. Qairunnisa, Reader and HOD of Physiology. This was followed by the first session of seminar by Dr. G. Purushothaman, Reader, Physiology. He briefed the audience about the importance of the publication and strategies. He also explained about the Plagiarism error rectification for good research publication and he also explained in detail about how to publish a research article in Scopus indexed journals which is used by the users to identify open access journals within Scopus.

This was followed by Dr. M. Saranya from General Pathology who delivered her lecture on “Detect and Prevent Plagiarism”. She stressed about Plagiarism Detection Techniques to compare a given material with any target material which is either a particular document and also about different techniques used in the Plagiarism Detection.

Rotary Endodontics - Drill & Fill

The Continuing Dental Education program titled on “Rotary Endodontics - Drill & Fill” under the auspices of The Tamil Nadu Dr. M. G. R Medical University, Chennai was held in the Vivekanandha Dental College for Women, Tiruchengode on 28th September 2017. The program commenced with the registration of the delegates at 1.00 pm followed by the prayer song by Dr.C.S.Vineetha & Dr.R.P.Chandrika co–ordinated the program and Dr. J. S. Sivakumar welcomed the august gathering.

The first Lecture was delivered by the guest speaker Dr.V.Mohan Babu,M.D.S., on the topic “Rotary endodontics”. This was followed by Dr.A.Andamuthu Sivakumar,M.D.S., who delivered the topic on “Recent Advances in Working length determination”. The speakers were felicitated with momemto by the Head of the Institution, Dr.(Capt) S. Gokulanathan. The entire gathering was provided with Hi tea. Vote of thanks was given by Dr.T.Sowmiya. Finally the program was concluded with the national anthem.

Department of Oral Medicine & Radiology, Vivekanandha Dental College for Women has conducted a Continuing Dental Education programme of lecture series on “Focus and Challenge”-Approaches to CBCT and Oral Cancer on 15th November 2017 at the College Auditorium. The programme was conducted to upgrade the knowledge about Cone-Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) and it’s application aspects in all fields of dental speciality, this program also educates and motivates the challenges towards technological advances in the early diagnosis of oral cancer which forms the fundamental unit in dental practice.This academic event was scheduled for 6 hours and accredited with 10 Credit points by our Tamil Nadu Dr.MGR Medical University. 250 delegates participated in this Programme.

The first session of the lecture series was between 09.30am -11.30 am, the speaker was Dr.Mohan MDS., Professor & HOD, Department of Oral Medicine & Radiology, Vinayaka Mission Dental Hospitals, Salem who delivered the topic on “CBCT For All Specialities Applications of CBCT in MaxilloFacial Imaging (Dentistry)”. He emphazied on how Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) is the latest revolutionary change in the imaging of Dentistry & it’s superiority to conventional CT with many dentist-specific applications

The second session of lecture series was Dr.Sudhaa Mani M who delivered her topic on “Targeted therapy - the future of oral cancer treatment” between 11.30 am-12.30 pm.This session highlighted on emerging therapeutic approaches in recurrent Oral cancer, emphasizing recent advances in targeted therapies, immunotherapy, and potential relevance of application.

The post-lunch session was by Dr.Mohan who delivered his topic on “Challenges in Diagnosis & Prevention of Oral Cancer” between 1.30 pm - 3.30 pm. This presentation was focused by discussing various challenges in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of oral cancers & how personalized treatment of oral cancer and targeted therapy are going to be future of cancer therapy.

The final session of lecture series was by Dr. N Balan who gave his lecture on CBCT: “Exploring Depths of the Novel Imaging Technique in between 3.30 pm - 4.30 pm. This lecture was aimed to the technological advances that surrounds our private and professional and how in turn medical imaging benefits from general enhancements in computers, offering faster and more refined views of our patient’s anatomy and disease states.

The vote of thanks was given by Dr.Divya Kanimozhi and the CDE programme was concluded with felicitation of the guest speaker and with national anthem.

Layers of beautification

Department of Pedodontics and Preventive Dentistry

Department of Pedodontics and Preventive Dentistry, Vivekanandha Dental College for Women has conducted a Continuing Dental Education Programme of lecture series followed by hands on of “Layers of Beautification” on 18th December 2017 at the College Auditorium. The Programme was conducted to upgrade the knowledge on the placement of composites in class 3, 4, 5 caries lesions and also direct veneers in a less technique sensitive and esthetically pleasing manner. This academic event was scheduled for 6 hours and accredited with 10 Credit points by our Tamil Nadu Dr.MGR Medical University. 155 delegates were participated in this Programme.

The first session of the lecture series was in between 09.30am -11.30 am, the speaker was Dr.Swathi chandran who delivered the topic on “Layers of Beautification on class 3, class 4, class 5 restorations”. She emphasized on the quick and simplified method on the application of composite resin in class 3, class 4 and class 5 cavities and also attentive use of finishing methods is mandatory for quality and natural appearance of restoration.

The second session of lecture series was given by Dr.V.Mahesh Mathian who delivered the topic on “Layers of Beautification on Direct veneers” between 11.30 am-12.30 pm. This session highlighted on the successive layers of composite placement and advantages of direct composite veneers over other materials.

The post-lunch session was by Dr.Swathi Chandran who gave Demo and hands on of “class 4 multilayered build up on typodonts” between 1.30 pm - 3.30 pm.

Department of Oral and Maxillo Facial Surgery

The Department of Oral and Maxillo Facial Surgery, Vivekanandha Dental College for Women has conducted a Continuing Dental Education programme on “IMPACTED TEETH - HIDDEN FACTS AND TOOTH IN THE LINE OF FRACTURE” on 20th December 2017 at the college auditorium. The programme was conducted to create awareness on the procedures of minor oral surgery in dental practice among the Faculties, Post Graduates and Under Graduate students. Around 270 delegates including faculties, postgraduates and undergraduates were participated in this programme.

The programme has started with formal Inauguration, Dr (capt). S. Gokulnathan MDS, Dean of VDCW, presiding over the function and Dr. N. Balan MDS, Principal of VDCW felicitate our Guest Speaker Dr. Dineshkumar MDS. The programme was started with prayer song.

The welcome address was given by Dr. Narendren MDS.

The first speaker of the day was Dr. Dineshkumar MDS and he delivered his lecture on “IMPACTED TEETH - HIDDEN FACTS”. He explained various delicate clinical situations commonly faced in dental practice and its effective management in removal of impacted tooth.

The next speaker was by Dr. Kavin MDS, who delivered his lecture on “TOOTH IN THE LINE OF FRACTURE”. He explained in detail about the importance of clinical examination, radiographic investigations and the management of tooth in line of fracture in trauma cases. The lecture was followed with panel discussion.

Dr.S.P.Indirakumar delivered vote of thanks and the programme was concluded with National Anthem.

The second session of the lecture series was in between 2.30 pm - 3.30 pm by Dr. Jayashree Mohan MDS., Professor & HOD, Department of Prosthodontics Crown & Bridge, Vinayaka Mission Dental Hospitals, Salem who delivered her lecture topic on “Implant Supported Mandibular Overdenture”. She emphasized on the advantages of Implant overdentures, which offer improved comfort, support, retention and stability.
