Minutes of meeting of Conference cum Continuing Dental Education programme

Department of Basic Medical Sciences, Vivekanandha Dental College for Women has conducted Conference cum Continuing Dental Education programme on “Saliva & HIV” on 29th & 30th November 2018 at the College Auditorium.The programme was conducted to provide information about Simple Saliva to Serious HIV infection which is to broaden the understanding of the pivotal role of Salivary gland and HIV in transforming Oral & Global health respectively. Saliva plays a vital role in the integrity of the oral tissues: in the selection, ingestion & preparation of food for digestion & in our ability to communicate with one another. This conference was also aimed to educate our students & faculties for handling HIV patients in Dental Chair & its clinical applications. In addition this conference also covered Management Protocols in HIV patients in a Dental Surgeon’s perspective.

Summary of Sessions - Day 1 (29th November 2018)

The programme began with the formal Inaugural function at 9.00 am. The Welcome address was delivered by Dr. Uma Arasu and the Inaugural address was given by Chief Guest Dr. S. Rajaram.M.D, Prof & HOD of Pharmacology, VMKV Medical College, Salem.

Shanmuga Sundaram who addressed the gathering and explained in detail about Anatomy of Salivary Gland. He stressed about the major salivary glands & ducts.

The second speaker of the first day session was Dr. G Gajalakshmi, Professor & HOD of Physiology, Asan Memorial Dental College and Hospitals who delivered her lecture on “Mechanism of Salivary Secretion”. She mentioned the Mechanism of Salivary Secretion in detail and emphasized on the various reflexes & spontaneous secretions which are concerned in dental clinics. She also spoke about salivary hypofunction, secretions and its importance.

This was followed by Dr. A.S. Meenakshi Sundaram. MD., Associate professor of Biochemistry, PSGIMSR, Coimbatore who delivered his lecture on “Salivary Markers”. He started the session by giving a detailed lecture on integral role of saliva. He explained briefly about the correlation of glycosylation changes in association with molecular markers and its role in progression of oral diseases.

Summary of Sessions Day 2 (30th November 2018)

The first day program session was summarized by Dr. Jisha George, Final year PG student of VDCW.

The first session of the second day programme was delivered by Dr.J.Karthikesh, M.D, on “Pathophysiology of HIV infection”. The speaker began with basics of HIV infections, epidemiology, pathogenesis, treatment and prevention. He also explained in detail about the life cycle and pathogenesis of HIV and the role of immune activation. He also specified about the stages of HIV & opportunistic infections encountered in HIV.

Dr. S. Mathavi, M.D, Associate Professor of Microbiology, Vinayaka Mission’s Kirupananda Variyar Medical College, Salem delivered her lecture on “Laboratory Diagnosis of HIV”. She started her session with Challenges and Barriers in the implementation of HIV Diagnostic Testing in Laboratories. She was highlighting about HIV Subtypes and Sensitivity of different Ag/Ab Assays, Performance & evaluations of different types of Screening and Supplemental Tests. She also recommended HIV Diagnostic Algorithm & its Practical interpretation guidelines for practiced in Laboratories.

Dr. T. Nivethitha, Assistant professor of Pharmacology, Chennai Medical College Hospital & Research Centre, Trichy spoke about “Management of HIV”. She explained about the basics of the treatment of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in various stages of the diseases and the management of opportunistic infections. She also explained in detail about the advances in antiretroviral therapy and increased life expectancy of patients with HIV infection.

Post lunch session of the CDE program was delivered by Dr. M. Sudhaamani, MDS Professor of Oral Medicine, VDCW on “Management Protocols in HIV patients – A Dental Surgeon’s perspective”. She spoke on Patients infected with HIV who are medically complicated and their health status which can change rapidly. It is important that the dental professionals should obtain a thorough health history. Careful assessment of the patient's health can aid in determination of the potential influences of HIV disease stage on dental treatment planning. She also explained in detail about the guidelines followed in the Management protocol in HIV patients in all dental speciality clinics.

Quiz Program was conducted for the students who were participated in the conference. The preliminary exam was conducted and first 12 students were selected for this Quiz competition. The six teams were participated in all 5 rounds of Quiz. Winner and Runner teams of the Quiz event was honoured.

Dr. M. Saranya delivered Vote of thanks and the programme was concluded with Valedictory Function and National Anthem.

Ridge Augmentation

Department of Periodontology and Implantology

Department of Periodontics, Vivekanandha Dental College for Women has conducted a Continuing Dental Education programme on “Ridge Augmentation” on 24th January 2018 at the College Auditorium. The programme was conducted to upgrade the knowledge about Ridge Augmentation and its clinical importance. This academic event was scheduled for 6 hours and accredited with 5 Credit points by our Tamil Nadu Dr.MGR Medical University. 287 delegates participated in this Programme.

The programme began with registrations at 8.30am followed by formal Inaugural function at 9.00am. The Welcome address was delivered by Professor Dr.Rajkumar Daniel MDS., introduction of Guest speaker was done by Dr.Vennila MDS., and the program was hosted by Dr.Niveditha.P BDS., Dr.Preethi.M BDS.,.

The first session of lecture series was by Professor Dr.G.Kaarthikeyan MDS who delivered his topic on “Current trends in bone augmentation” between 9.30am – 11.00am. This session highlighted on the procedures of ridge augmentation that is clinically followed in the current day practice.

The second session of the lecture series was in between 11.15am – 12.30pm by Professor Dr. Elanchezhiyan MDS., Professor & HOD, Department of Periodontics, Vivekanandha Dental College, Elayampalayam, who delivered a lecture on “Types of Augmentation”. He emphasized on the types of materials used in hard and soft tissue augmentation.

The post lunch session was by Dr.G.Kaarthikeyan MDS., on the topic “Hard and soft tissue Augmentation, clinical challenges in augmentation”.

The final session was on the topic “Types of bone grafts and its clinical implications” by Dr.Vennila MDS.,

Vote of thanks was given by Dr. Viola Esther MDS., and finally the CDE programme was concluded with national anthem.

Exploring the unexplored avenue in dentistry

Department of Public Health Dentistry

The Department of Public Health Dentistry, Vivekanandha Dental College for Women has conducted a Continuing Dental Education Programme on "Patent and Copyright - Exploring the unexplored avenue in dentistry” on 7th February 2018 at the College Auditorium.

The programme was conducted to give an organized approach for the steps involved in converting the invention to a patent and copyright product in an easy and understandable manner. This academic event was accredited with 10 Credit points by the centre for CME Accreditation Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University. Around 400 delegates including Faculties, Postgraduates and Undergraduates participated in this Programme.

The programme began with the formal Inaugural function at 9.00 am with the Dean Dr. (Capt). S. Gokulanathan B.Sc., MDS who presiding over the function.

The Principal welcomed the Chief Guest, Dr.M.Senthil, and he delivered the Inaugural address. Dr.Girish R Shavi, delivered the speech on "Technology transfer: From Research to Making Returns”. He spoke about an overview to patent and copyright which includes types of patents, history of patents, patent related business strategies and techniques.

It was followed by Dr.M.Senthil, on "Patent and Copyright - Exploring the unexplored avenue in dentistry and Road Map to conquer the battle ", which explore all the possibilities how to patent and copyright all the inventions and innovations.

The program was continued by Dr.S.Shankar on “Ethical issues in obtaining intellectual property rights”, he discussed the ethical arguments related to patenting in healthcare research with special attention given to patency of dental products.

This seminar also provides views on patency infringement and other ethical issues in patents and copyrights.Finally, the CDE was concluded with the Vote of thanks proposed by Dr.G.Lalithambigai & and the programme was concluded with National Anthem..

3D Model making competition “SCULPTRIS”

Department of Basic Medical Sciences

The Departments of Basic Medical Sciences, Vivekanandha Dental College for Women has conducted a 3D Model making competition “SCULPTRIS” on 8th March 2018 for the first year and second year under graduate students.

The programme was based on the theme of ‘Feel free to let your imagination run wild ’. It was conducted in the forenoon session to improve a set of skills, interest and potentiality to understand the Dental curriculum which includes Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Pharmacology and General pathology with an ease. Around 70 undergraduate students have participated in the event.

The programme began with the formal Inaugural function at 9.15 am. The students were given three hours time to show their creativity in 3D model making competition.

The post lunch session was International Women's Day celebration with the formal Inaugural function at 1.30 pm with the Dean Dr. (Capt). S. Gokulanathan B.Sc., MDS, who presiding over the function. In this International Women’s day, Dr Meenakshiammal MD., Professor and Head of Department of Pharmacology pioneer in the field of Pharmacology was honoured & acknowledged for her 40 years of sincere and dedicated service in teaching. Her compassion, patience and love for the subject has activated the magnets of curiosity, knowledge and wisdom in hundreds of pupils. She was honoured by The Dean, Vivekanandha Dental College for Women. The Dean in his felicitation said that “A good teacher is like a candle- it consumes itself to light the way for others.”

The students were awarded with prizes for their outstanding performance and skills in the SCULPTRIS competition .This was followed by a Debate competition for the first year and second year students for their extracurricular activities. Finally, the celebration was concluded with the Vote of thanks proposed by Dr. Uma Arasu and followed with National Anthem.

Fibredontics – Reloaded

Department of Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics

The Department of Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics, Vivekanandha Dental College for Women has conducted a Continuing Dental Education Programme on "Fibredontics – Reloaded!” on 18th April 2018 at the College Auditorium.

The programme began with the formal Inaugural function at 9.00 am with the Dean Dr. (Capt). S. Gokulanathan B.Sc., MDS who presiding over the function. Dr Vaiyapuri Ravi, MDS., HOD of the Conservative Dentistry welcomed the Chief Guest, Dr.Chandramouli.,B.D.S., and he delivered the Inaugural address.

The programme began with the formal Inaugural function and prayer song by Dr.C.S.Vineetha at 9.00 am with lighting kuthuvilakku by the Dean Dr. (Capt). S. Gokulanathan B.Sc., MDS and Guest Speaker. The welcome address was given b Dr. S.Saravanapriyan MDS and the programme was coordinated by Dr.R.S.Anuradha

The Guest speaker of the programme was Dr.Chandramouli.,B.D.S., who delivered his topic on “Fibredontics – Reloaded”.

Post Lunch session was Live Demonstration and given by our Guest Speaker Dr.Chandramouli.,B.D.S.,

The speaker was felicitated with momemto by our Dean. Dr.(Capt) S. Gokulanathan. The entire gathering was provided with Hi tea. Vote of thanks was given by Dr.A.S.Prasad.M.D.S., the program was concluded with the national anthem.

Be Wise Be Ready

Department Of Oral And Maxillo Facial Surgery

The CDE programme was scheduled for 10.00 a.m. on 17th August 2018 and has been cancelled following the demise of Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. This programme was postponed to 18th August 2018 & conducted successfully. The followings are the minutes of meeting.

The Department of Oral and Maxillo Facial Surgery, Vivekanandha Dental College for Women has conducted a Continuing Dental Education programme on “BE WISE BE READY” on 18th August 2018 at the college auditorium. The programme was conducted to create awareness on the emerging medicolegal scenarios and its effective management in daily clinical practice among the Faculties, Post Graduates and Under Graduate students. Around 300 delegates including faculties, postgraduates and undergraduates were participated in this programme.

The programme has started with formal Inauguration, Dr (Capt). S. Gokulanathan MDS, Dean of VDCW, presiding over the function and Dr. N. Balan MDS, Principal of VDCW felicitate our Guest Speaker Dr.Phani Kumar Kuchimanchi., MDS.,. The programme was started with prayer song.

The first speaker of the day was Dr. PHANI KUMAR KUCHIMANCHI.,MDS and he delivered his lecture on “ETHICS AND MEDICO-LEGAL CONSIDERATIONS IN DENTISTRY”.

He explained various challenging medicolegal situations commonly faced in dental practice and the various methods to be followed and incorporated in daily practice to effectively safe guard the dental practioners.

The next speaker was by Dr.R.NARENDAR MDS, who delivered his lecture on “DENTAL PRACTICE MANAGEMENT”. He stressed in detail about the importance of maintaining proper detailed clinical, radiological records in daily dental practice .he also stressed on various technological value added measures to be incorporated in daily dental practice.

Dr.S.P.Indirakumar MDS delivered vote of thanks and the programme was concluded with National Anthem.

Department of Periodontics, Vivekanandha Dental College for Women has conducted a Continuing Dental Education programme on “Tune Into Bone” on 24th August 2018 at the College Auditorium. The programme was conducted to upgrade the knowledge about Dental implants and its clinical importance. This academic event was scheduled for 6 hours and accredited with 5 Credit points by our Tamil Nadu Dr.MGR Medical University. Around 250 delegates were participated in this Programme.

The programme began with registrations at 8.30am followed by formal Inaugural function at 9.00am. The Welcome address was delivered by Dr.Rajkumar Daniel MDS., Guest speaker of the programme was introduced by Dr.Vennila MDS., and the program was hosted by Dr.Jananippriya BDS., and Dr.Subhashini BDS.,.

Summary of Sessions

  • The first session of lecture series was presented by Dr.Sayee Ganesh MDS who delivered his topic on “Tune Into Bone” between 9.30am – 11.00am. He highlighted on the basics of dental implants.
  • The second session of the lecture series was in between 11.15am – 12.30pm by Dr. Elanchezhiyan MDS., Professor & HOD, Department of Periodontics, Vivekanandha Dental College, Elayampalayam, who delivered a lecture on “Dilemma in Augmentation During Implant”. He emphasized on the clinical difficulties that one may come across while placing implants and how to handle them using suitable case illustrations.
  • The 3rd lecture was given on the topic “Complications in Implant Surgery” by Dr.Rajkumar Daniel MDS from 1.30pm to 2.30 pm. He explained in detail about accidents and local complications in dental implantation. He also stressed about the diverse methods and terminology.
  • The final programme of the session was delivered by Dr.Vennila MDS on “Types of bone grafts and its clinical implications” from 2.30pm to 3.30pm. She explained in detail about many procedures currently require the use of bone grafts to replace or recover bone volume. She also stressed the effectiveness of bone grafts on patients' perceptions that can be explored to patient and also the different types of bone grafts that has been used in dental treatments.

Felicitation of the chief guest was done by Principal Dr.Balan MDS., and a momento to honor the chief guest was also presented.

Vote of thanks was given by Dr. Gayathri MDS., and finally the CDE programme was concluded with national anthem.

Conscious Sedation In Pediatric Dentistry

Department of Pedodontics and Preventive Dentistry

Department of Pedodontics and Preventive Dentistry, Vivekanadha Dental College for Women has conducted a Continuing Dental Education program of lecture series on 25th September 2018 at the college auditorium. The program was conducted to upgrade the knowledge on the myths and facts of sedation in Pediatric Dentistry and about tricks used in Pediatric Endodontics. This academic event was scheduled for 6 hours and accredited with 10 credit points by our Tamil Nadu Dr.M.G.R. University. Around 255 delegates were participated in this program.

Dr. Mahesh Mathian (Professor and HOD of Pedodontics and Preventive dentistry, VDCW) delivered welcome address to the gathering. Dr. Sharon Maria.E (Post graduate student) anchoring the program.Dr.E.K.Menaka (Post graduate student) Introduced the guest speaker to the audience. Dr.A.Niranjana(Post graduate student) Introduced the guest speaker to the audience.

Summary of Sessions

  • The first session of the lecture series was between 9:30 am -11:30 am, the speaker was Dr. Padmanabhan who delivered the topic on “Intravenous Sedation”. He emphasized on the importance of sedation in the present-day life. He also explained updated us with current advancements in conscious sedation and erased the false myths with facts.
  • The second session of the lecture series was between 11:30 am -12:30 am, the speaker was Dr. Mahesh Mathian who delivered the topic on “Oral Sedation”. This session highlighted on the simple method of administration of sedation to overcome fear and anxiety and he also stressed about recent advance of sedation methods and different routes of sedations.
  • The third session of the programme was commenced after the lunch break and the lecture was delivered by Dr. Gawthaman on “conscious sedation” between 1:30 pm -2:30 pm. He explained and discussed in detail about the benefits of conscious sedation and emphasized on the proper use of sedation for the right procedure at the right time.
  • The final presentation of the programme was Dr. Vijayaragavan who delivered the topic on “Pediatric endodontricks” between 2:30 pm -3:30 pm. He highlighted on the tricks used in pediatric endodontics and he also shared about his experience of endodontricks into practice.

Vote of thanks was given by Dr. Vinodh and the CDE program was concluded with felicitation of the speaker by the Principal, Dr.N. Balan and with national anthem.

Contemporary Art Of Parochial Stomatology

Department Of Oral Medicine & Radiology

Department of Oral Medicine & Radiology, Vivekanandha Dental College for Women has conducted a Continuing Dental Education programme of Seminar on “CONTEMPORARY ART OF PAROCHIAL STOMATOLOGY” on 10th October 2018 at the College Auditorium. The programme was conducted to upgrade the knowledge on Oral Medicine (Stomatology) which is recognized and increasingly important in Dental specialty in many parts of the world and promotes the interplay between Medical and Oral health. This academic event was scheduled for 6 hours and accredited with 10 Credit points by our esteemed Tamil Nadu Dr.MGR Medical University. 250 delegates participated in this Programme.

The programme began with the formal Inaugural function at 09.00 am. The Welcome address was delivered by Dr.Sudhaa Mani M and the Inaugural address was given by Dr.Chitra Mohan.

Summary of Sessions

  • The first session of the lecture series was between 09.30am -11.30 am, the speaker was Dr. Eswar Nagaraj MDS., Professor, Department of Oral Medicine & Radiology who delivered the topic on “Environmental influences on Oral diseases”. He emphasized that how medical awareness is raised amongst the general population, environmental changes due to rise in pollution levels, allergic incidences to newer drugs, recent pandemic status of HIV etc., may all be attributed to the increased incidences of oral lesions.
  • The second session of lecture series was Dr.Sudhaa Mani M who delivered her topic on “Diagnostic approach invesiculo-bullous lesions” between 11.30 am-12.30 pm. She highlighted on knowledge of the clinical presentation on disorders of invesiculo - bullous lesions and the relevant diagnostic procedures which is most important for dermatologists, general practitioners and dentists.
  • The post-lunch session was by Dr.EswarNgaraj who delivered his topic on “Minimum intervention dentistry(MID) in oral medicine” between 1.30 pm -3.30 pm. This presentation was focused by how oral medicine specialist practices MID on a daily basis. With the advent of sophisticated early detection and diagnostic technology, and the growing understanding of oral diseases at the microscopic and molecular levels, all oral health practitioners can contribute to the practice of oral medicine from a MID perspective.
  • The final session of lecture series was by Dr.Yasmeen Ahamed who delivered his lecture on “Biologics in Oral Medicine” in between 3.30 pm - 4.30 pm. This lecture was aimed to understand the importance of managing patients who receiving biologics therapy for systemic disease and compliance is essential in any use in oral medicine. He also stressed about key aspects of current guidance which is presented with particular emphasis on their relevance to clinicians working within oral and maxillofacial medicine \ pathology and surgery.

The vote of thanks was given by Dr.Nanitha Lakshmi and the CDE programme was concluded with felicitation of the guest speaker and with national anthem.
