Minutes of meeting of Conference cum Continuing Dental Education programme
Department of Basic Medical Sciences, Vivekanandha Dental College for Women has conducted a Conference cum Continuing Dental Education programme on “Recent Updates on Anemia” on 23rd & 24th January 2020 at the College Auditorium. The programme was conducted to provide information about anemia which has a serious public health concern today. Dentists are unaware of some of the critical oral manifestations of Anemia. This two day conference was aimed at enriching awareness and its importance among practicing dentists, dental surgeons, hygienists and students about the symptoms of Anemia. This conference also covered the recent advances in Anemia.
Summary of Sessions Day 1 (23rd January 2020)
The programme began with the formal Inaugural function with prayer song & lighting kuthuvillaku at 9.00 am. The Welcome address was delivered by Dr. Uma Arasu.

Mrs. Subhulakshmi, Professor of Anatomy introduced our first speaker, Dr. B. Senthil Kumar and addressed the gathering. Dr. B. Senthil Kumar explained in detail about Stem Cells and recent research work in this field. He also stressed about the ability of Stem Cells for the development of tissues & its future therapeutic applications.
After a Tea Break, the second speaker of the first day session was Dr. K. Prabhavathi., MD., Professor, Department of Physiology, SRM Medical College & Research Center, Chennai who delivered her lecture on “Physiology of Anaemia”. She mentioned the Physiological basis of Anaemia & it various types. She stressed about WHO criteria for Anaemia, complication, prevalence and problems that are faced by the students especially females in this modern society. Finally she also spoke about some of recent advance on Anaemia.
This was followed by Dr. Priya K Dhas. Ph.D. Assistant Professor of Biochemistry, VMKV Medical College & Hospital, Salem who delivered his lecture on “Biochemical aspects of Anaemia”. She started the session by giving a detailed lecture on Anaemia. She explained briefly about the Hemoglobin levels, various vitamins & minerals including iron, folate, B12 and C. She also stressed about biochemical investigations of serum iron, ferritin, total iron binding capacity and soluble transferrin receptor levels and its major role in Adult females & pregnant women. She concluded her session by stressing the role of Vit. C in absorption of iron.
The post lunch session was a small Role Play programme, the Department of Physiology has guided the I BDS student to perform role play on “Anaemia”. Students enacted the signs, symptoms and serious complications of Anaemia. Students also played doctor role actively, they have mentioned the management and treatment part of Anaemia. The Role Play was concluded with a power point presentation on Anaemia with take home message to our undergraduate students.
Post lunch session was “Oral & e – Poster Presentation” by I & II BDS students of VDCW on 23rd and 24th respectively.

Summary of Sessions - Day 2 (24th January 2020)
The Second day programme started with recap of the first day session by Ms. Kiruthika Sree, Final year dental student of VDCW.
The first session of the second day programme was delivered by Dr. P. Senthil, M.D, Associate Professor, Department of General Pathology, E.S.I Medical College, Coimbatore on “Pathophysiology of Anaemia”. The speaker began with basics of Anaemia and he also stressed about WHO criteria of blood parameters and values in Anaemia.
He also explained in detail about the mechanisms underlying the development of anaemia, histopathological basis of Anaemia, causes of nutrient deficiency include inadequate dietary intake, increased nutrient losses, impaired absorption and altered nutrient metabolism. There was a quiz session conducted by the speaker at the end of his session and the winners were honoured with compliments.
Dr. Mohana Soundaram, M.D, Professor & HOD of Microbiology, IRT Medical College, Perundurai delivered her lecture on “Microbes – An undercover agent of Anaemia”. She started her session with genetics basis of Anaemia & its destruction properties and Laboratory diagnosis.
She also highlighted about destruction of red blood cells leading to a hemolytic anemia which has been found to occur in malaria and vitamin B12 megaloblastic anaemia. She also explained about causes of blood loss include infection by the infestation of hookworms and the whipworm Trichuris trichiura.
Dr. E. Manivannan, M.D, Professor of Pharmacology, VMKV Medical College & Hospital, Salem spoke about “Pharmacological Management of Anaemia”. He explained about the basic treatment modalities of Anaemia in various types. Especially he explained in detail about the most common type anaemia where ferrous and ferric salts are given either orally or parentally for treatment of iron deficiency anaemia. He also stressed about role of vitamin b12 and folic acid administration for the treatment of anaemia.
Post lunch session of the CDE program was delivered Dr. S. Arthanareeswaran, M.D, Reader Department of General Medicine, Vivekanandha Medical Care Hospital on “Recent updates on Anaemia”. He spoke on Clinical features, common causes of anaemia on recent advance with few case studies.
Dr. M. Saranya delivered Vote of thanks and the programme was concluded with Valedictory Function and National Anthem.
SCAN TO PLAN – 3D CONE BEAM IMAGING
Department of Oral Medicine & Radiology, Vivekanandha Dental College for Women has conducted a Continuing Dental Education programme on “SCAN TO PLAN – 3D CONE BEAM IMAGING” on 11th December 2019 at the College Auditorium. The programme was conducted to upgrade the knowledge on CBCT, an advanced radiographic Imaging technology which is specifically used by dentist in their practice. This academic event was scheduled for 6 hours and accredited with 6 Credit points by our esteemed Tamilnadu Dental Council. 250 delegates participated in this Programme.
The programme began with the formal Inaugural function at 08.45 am. The Welcome address was delivered by Dr.Sudhaa Mani M and the Inaugural address was given by Dr.Nanitha Lakshmi.

Summary of Sessions
The first session of the lecture series was between 09.00am -10.00 am, the speaker was Dr. Saravana Bharathi MDS., who delivered the topic on “Need for 3D imaging in Dentistry”. He gave brief description of CBCT and clinical application of the same. He provided information about CBCT anatomy of maxillofacial region and how to interpret images from CBCT.

The second session of lecture series was Dr. Nelson MDS, who delivered his topic on “What, When and How in CBCT ” between 10.00 am-11.00 am. He highlighted about the machine in which the imaging has been taken and its principles. He also explains when to prescribe it, in which condition they shouldn't and how the machine operates, how the image is made and how to interpret.

The third session of lecture series was Dr. John Hearty Deepak MDS, who delivered his topic on “Dental Implications of CBCT ” between 11.00 am-12.15 pm. He highlighted on basic interpretation of CBCT, normal anatomical structures, radiographic appearance of various pathologies and he emphasized on implant placement guided by CBCT.

The post-lunch session was hands-on workshop from 1.00 pm – 4.00 pm by Dr. Saravana Bharathi, Dr. Nelson, Dr. John Hearty Deepak. The workshop focused on the usage of software to view the CBCT images, tools in CBCT, construction of images in multiple planes, visual implant placements and interpretation of images.
The vote of thanks was given by Dr.Babu Susai Raj and the CDE programme was concluded with felicitation of the guest speakers and with national anthem.
