Dental implants – made easy

Department of Prosthodontics and crown & bridge, Vivekanandha Dental College for Women has conducted a Continuing Dental Education Programme on the topic “Dental implants – made easy” on 16th December 2022 at the College Auditorium. The main aim of this programme was to enhance the knowledge on current concepts of dental implants in a practice oriented approach. This academic event was scheduled for about 6 hours and 30 minutes. It was accredited with 5 credit points by our esteemed Tamil Nadu Dental Council (appr no 461/22) and nearly 250 delegates participated in this programme.

The programme began with the registration and a formal inaugural function started by 9.00 - 9.30 am.The programme commenced with a prayer song followed by lighting of kuthu vilaku by the Guest speaker Dr. Rakshagan MDS, Associate Professor, Department of Prosthodontics, Saveetha Dental College, Chennai and our college staffs Dr.Sudhamani MDS, Professor, Department of Oral medicine & Radiology, Dr.Devaki MDS, Professor, Department of Prosthodontics, a post graduate student and an intern. The welcome address and the introduction of the Guest speaker was done by Dr.Vishnupriya MDS, Senior Lecturer, Department of Prosthodontics, followed by felicitation of the Guest Speaker by our respected Principal Dr. Balan.

The first session of the lecture was held between 9.30 – 11.00 am by the guest speaker Dr.Rakshagan MDS, on the topic “Dental implants“.

He gave a brief description of about the topic and also added a few words on recent innovations in the placement of dental implants which enlightened our knowledge followed by tea break.

The second session of the lecture was between 11.00 am - 12.00 pm. The speaker of this session was Dr.Ajay MDS, Associate Professor, Department of Prosthodontics and crown & bridge.

He delivered lecture on the topic “Loading concepts and protocols in Dental Implants“.

The third session of the lecture was conducted between 12.00 pm – 1.00 pm. The speaker of this session was Dr.Viswanathan MDS, Associate Professor, Department of Prosthodontics and crown & bridge. He delivered lecture on the topic “Implant impression“.

The fourth session of the lecture series was held post lunch between 2.00 – 3.30pm. This was a video demonstration session regarding the placement of implant and its impression technique performed on a Styrofoam model and elaborative discussion with participants was done.

Finally, the programme was concluded with the vote of thanks by Dr.Ponjayanti MDS, Senior Lecturer, Department of Prosthodontics.

Undergraduate - IV BDS orientation programme

Vivekanandha Dental College for Women has conducted a UG – Final BDS Orientation programme on 29th November 2022 at the College Auditorium

Dr.V.Devaki. MDS, professor in Department of Prosthodontics and Crown & Bridge, delivered a scientific orientation lecture on 29.11.2022 to the IV BDS graduates. The aim of the lecture was to acclimatize the students to the existing clinical scenario in the department. Also, the safety precautions and other etiquettes were elucidated. Examination pattern and clinical exercises along with pre-clinical assignments were explicated. Sterilization protocols, instrumentations and dress code were also emphasized. Students’ role in the research activities and the importance of participation in the research projects were rationalized. Nonetheless, the importance of dental materials and their role in the specialty was accentuated. It was concluded that contemplating on strict discipline and dignity would pave the way for a successful clinical practice.

In the second session, Dr. Yasmeen Ahamed., Associate Professor, Department of Oral Medicine and Radiology, delivered a scientific orientation lecture to the IV BDS graduates. The faculties of the department were introduced. A brief discussion of oral medicine & radiology and the patient allotted, examination procedure, diagnosis, and treated were highlighted. An insight of case history, demonstration of clinical examination techniques, radiographic techniques and radiology to imagology was discussed. Good sterilization protocol & Personal protection during radiology were sturdily instructed to the students. The overall program was targeted to orient the students to department activities and to provoke high-order thinking skills.

The next session of the programme was by Dr. R. Narendar MDS, Professor, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He explained to students in detail regarding the duties and responsibilities to be followed in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery during their study period in the department. He also briefed the students regarding the teaching faculties of the department. The aim of this lecture was to explain to the students regarding the final BDS syllabus. He stressed the students regarding the protocols to be followed in the department clinical posting.

He emphasized the importance of sterilization procedures and protocols to be followed, list of instruments to be brought during each clinical posting. Students were also instructed to complete their clinical works and posting on time during their scheduled course period.

He also gave the list of textbooks to be followed for studying and reference during their final BDS program. He stressed the importance of attending all the scheduled Internal Assessment Examinations without fail.

This lecture was continued by Dr. Pawan Kumar Bhandari, Reader in Department of Orthodontics & Dentofacial Orthopedics. The aim of the lecture was to familiarize the curriculum of final year BDS students to the existing clinical scenario in the Orthodontics and the safety precautions and dress code. Armamentarium used for preclinical exercises, patient clinical examination, sterilization protocol was enumerated. Examination pattern, pre-clinical exercises schedule along with pre-clinical assignments and assessment methods of their performance were explicated. Students’ role in the research activities and the importance of participation in the research projects were rationalized. The importance of diagnosis and management of malocclusion their role in the specialty was highlighted. This lecture concluded with contemplating on strict discipline and dignity that would pave the way for a successful clinical practice.

Dr. J. Saravana Priyan Soundappan, Associate Professor, from the Department of Conservative Dentistry & Endodontics delivered an orientation lecture about the clinical training to the IV BDS students. Initially, he introduced all Teaching faculties of the department and he explained about the infrastructure of the department in detail with adequate photographs. Basic discipline and decorum to be followed in the clinicals was explained in detail. The treatment services provided were listed. Equipments needed for the clinical procedures, clinical logbook, assignment notebook and their maintenance were explained. Clinical case quota, university exam syllabus and pattern were clearly explained with the marks distribution. Finally, the prescribed textbooks and reference textbooks were enlisted to the students.

Dr. S. Vinodh. MDS, Department of Pedodontics and Preventive Dentistry's professor, delivered a scientific orientation lecture on 29.11.2022 to the IV BDS graduates. The lecture aimed to acclimatize the students to the existing clinical scenario in the department. Also, the safety precautions and other etiquettes were elucidated. Examination patterns and clinical exercises along with pre-clinical assignments were explicated. Sterilization protocols, instrumentations, and dress codes were also emphasized. Students’ role in the research activities and the importance of participation in the research projects were rationalized. Various activities like children’s day celebration, School dental camp, and screening of patients that take place in the Department of Pedodontics were informed to the students. Students were informed about their quota of long cases to be observed in the department. A brief presentation was given to highlight all the important points. Nonetheless, the importance of dental materials and their role in the specialty was accentuated. A tour of the play area, and the department was given to the students. It was concluded that contemplating strict discipline and dignity would pave the way for a successful clinical practice.

Dr.S.Senthilkumar, Associate Professor, Department of Public Health Dentistry, delivered a scientific orientation lecture to IV BDS graduates. The faculties of the department had been introduced, a brief discussion of Public Health Dentistry and importance of a brief Case History with examination, diagnosis and treatment protocol was discussed. An insight of case history, demonstration of clinical examination techniques with Indices recording was discussed. Field Visits to Water treatment plant, Schools, Camps, Satellite Centers, PHCs, etc. for the students has been explained. The overall program was targeted to orient the students towards department activities and outreach programs with field visits to improve their knowledge and skills in clinical Dentistry.

Dr.K.VENNILA MDS, Associate professor in Department of Periodontics, delivered her scientific orientation lecture to the IV BDS graduates. The aim of the lecture was to acclimatize the students to the existing clinical scenario in the department. Also, the safety precautions and other etiquettes were elucidated. Examination pattern and clinical exercises along with pre-clinical assignments were explicated. Sterilization protocols, instrumentations and dress code were also emphasized. Students’ role in the research activities and the importance of participation in the research projects were rationalized. Nonetheless, the importance of periodontal therapy and their role in the specialty was accentuated. It was concluded that contemplating on strict discipline and dignity would pave the way for a successful clinical practice.

Finally, the programme concluded with vote of thanks by Dr. Devaki followed by with National anthem.

Children"s Day Celebration

The Department of Pediatric & Preventive Dentistry, organized children's day celebration programme on 14.11.2022. The theme selected for Children's Day 2022 was "Mickey & Minnie". 30 children from Mahadeva Vidhyalaya Primary School, from class 1 to 5 attended the celebration.

Various games and fun activities were organized for the children. Fun activities included coloring & connecting the dots of Mickey & Minnie. Games including passing the ball, In & out, Ball & Basket were conducted.

Refreshments and cake cutting was organized for the children. The children very enthusiastically cut the cake, and had them. At the end of the session, dental screening and oral health education was givento the students. Tooth pastes and gifts were given to all the children separately and also for the prize winners. The celebration ended with overwhelming smiles in their little hearts.

Enlightment 2022- Fostering smiles Globally

Department of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopaedics, Vivekanandha Dental College for Women and South West Tamil Nadu Orthodontic Study Group conducted a Continuing Dental Education Programme - “Enlightment 2022, Fostering Smiles Globally” on the 16th October 2022 at the college auditorium. The one day academic program was accredited with 5 CDE credit points by our Tamil Nadu State Dental Council (TNDC R.NO 393/22 ). 45 participants from various colleges took part in this event.

The programme started with gathering of convenors of South West Tamilnadu Orthodontic Study Group Dr. Dhivakar Selvaraj, Dr. Nagalakshmi, Dr. Jason Roy on the diaz and invoking the blessings of the Almighty, with prayer song and lamp lightening at 9:30am followed by welcome address by Prof. Dr. S.NagalakshmiM.D.S., Head of Department of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopaedics,Vivekanandha Dental College for Women.

The First lecture was on the “Diagnosis- A fading art” orated by Dr. Sumalatha M.D.S.,Associate Professor, Best Dental Science College, Madurai. She elaborately discussed about the importance of proper diagnosis and treatment planning with case reports.

The second lecture was delivered by Prof Dr.VaratharajaM.D.S., Head of the Department at CSI Dental College on topic “Cephalometrics for Orthognathic Surgery”. He explained in detail, the various aspects regarding diagnosis and treatment planning using cephalometrics before undergoing orthognathic surgery. The participants actively raised question and was clarified by the speaker in the following Q & A session.

The Third speaker was Prof. Dr.RajasekarM.D.S HOD at RVS Dental College on topic of “Drunken philosophies for smile buddies”. He enlighted on various options like research, clinicals, academics for staffs and post graduation students.

The fourth speaker was an interactive session byProf. Dr.NagalakshmiM.D.S., HOD at Vivekanandha Dental College for Women, Thiruchengodeon topic of “Class 2 Correctors”. She emphasized the importance of proper diagnosis and treatment planning before undertaking a class 2 patient. Also, she explained about various class 2 correctors with case reports.

The Fifth speaker was Dr.Anusuya M.D.S.., Associate Professor at Vinayaka Missions Sankarachariyar Dental, Salem on topic “Errors that mirror the research deficiency in orthodontics”. She enlightedon the value of research work and publications. Also she discussed the importance of evidence based clinical practice.

After lunch break, session II was conducted inclusive of paper and poster presentation. 18 post graduate students actively participated in poster presentation on topic “orthodontic awareness for general public” Dr.Anupreetha Vinayaka Mission Sankarachariyar Dental college secured the 1st place followed by Dr. Harivadhani from KSR Dental College, Dr.Keerthana from RVS Dental college secured Second and Third place respectively.

A total of 9 post graduate students participated in paper presentation Dr.Kamala from Best dental science college secured the 1st place followed by Dr. Deepika from CSI Dental College and Dr.Haripriya from Vivekananda Dental College for Women secured second and third place respectively.

The programme was an brain kindler to thepostgraduates and academicians which paved way for upbringing their understanding and skills in handling and treating the patients.

The CDE program on “Enlightment 2022- Fostering smiles Globally” received a valuable feedback from the delegates and enthusiastic participation of students from various colleges. Certificates were issued to the participants of the CDE program.The session was concluded with the vote of thanks by Dr.Syed Khalid , Professor, Department of Orthodontics followed by the National Anthem.

WORKSHOP ON “CONSCIOUS SEDATION

Department of Pediatric and Preventive Dentistry, Vivekanandha Dental College for Women organized a HANDS-ON WORKSHOP on “NITROUS OXIDE INHALATIONAL SEDATION” on 11th and 12th August 2022 at the College Auditorium. The program was conducted to enlighten our knowledge on the various aspects of conscious sedation and to give a live experience on the clinical procedures and operation related to it. This workshop was scheduled for 8 hours each day and accredited with 12 Credit points by our esteemed Tamil Nadu Dental Council with 25 delegates participated in this workshop.

The program began with a divine prayer song and lightening of the lamp to acquire the blessings of God at 8 am.

Following this the Welcome address was delivered by Dr. Garima Bolia and the Introduction of Guest Speakers was given by Dr. Mahesh Mathian V, MDS., Professor & Head of Department.

SUMMARY OF SESSIONS

DAY 1

The sessions begin with assessment of the participants knowledge on NOIS using a pre-workshop assessment form. The first session of the lecture series was between 09.00 am -1 0.00 am, delivered by the guest speaker, Dr. Jeeva Rathan J, MDS., on the topic “Introduction to Conscious Sedation, Pharmacokinetics and Dynamics of Nitrous Oxide”. He gave brief description of routes of conscious sedation and the history of Nitrous oxide sedation being used in dentistry. He also elaborated on the pharmacokinetics and dynamics of the drug.

The second session of lecture series was between 10.00 am-11.00 am, delivered by the guest speaker, Dr. Roshan Rayen, MDS., ICCDE (USA) on “Indications, Contraindications of NOIS”. He highlighted about the effect of Nitrous oxide sedation on various systems of body and its safe usage in patients with certain medical conditions. He also added videos for better understanding of the topic.

The third session of lecture series was given by Dr. Roshan Rayen on the topic “NOIS Machine - Parts & its Safety features” between 11.30 am - 12.30 pm. He gave a clear picture of the parts and safety features incorporated in the NOIS machine. He also let the participants touch and feel the machine for better gaining of knowledge.

The fourth session of lecture series was delivered by Dr. Jeeva Rathan, on the topic “Clinical Signs and Symptoms of NOIS” between 12.30 pm - 1.30 pm. He helped the participants gain in-depth knowledge on the psychological, physiological and physical signs and symptoms of sedated patients. He also briefed out regarding the signs and symptoms to watch out in an over-sedated patient.

The workshop sessions for the day ended with Live Case Demons tration and discussion by Dr. Roshan Rayen and Dr. Jeeva Rathan which enabled the participants to clearly visualize the clinical scenario of using NOIS.

DAY 2

The 2nd day of the workshop started with the fifth session of the lecture series which was delivered by Dr. Mahesh Mathian V, between 09.00 am -10.00 am, on the topic “Technique of Administration of NOIS”. He gave a brief discussion on patient assessment and the techniques of administration of NOIS with videos. He also elaborated on the checklist on stepwise procedures for NOIS.

The sixth session of lecture series was between 10.00 am-11.00 am, Dr. Gawthaman M on “Clinical Applications of NOIS in Clinical Practice with Pediatric Perspective”. He highlighted about the Applications of NOIS clinically for a pediatric patient. He also introduced the preparation routine and the checklist to be borne in mind while treating a pediatric patient under NOIS.

The seventh session of lecture series was given by Dr. Mahesh Mathian V, on the topic “Complications of NOIS and its Management” between 11.30 am - 12.30 pm. He gave a detailed view on the complications that could be expected while treating a patient under NOIS and its management. He also gave a brief idea on the emergency drugs and equipments to be present in a dental setup while practicing NOIS.

The eighth session of lecture series was delivered by Dr. Gawthaman M, MDS., Professor on the topic “Medical Emergencies” between 12.30 pm - 1.30 pm. He discussed about the various medical emergencies and conditions in a dental setup during NOIS and its management. He also briefed out about the precautions to be carried out before treating patients with known medical conditions.

After the lecture sessions, a Live Hands on was conducted for the participants wherein they were let to experience the art of ad ministering nitrous oxide sedation and also were let to acquire the impression of getting sedated for themselves.

Finally the participants were made to attend the post -workshop assessment form to assess their knowledge they have acquired through the workshop. The Vote of Thanks was given by Dr. Kamatchi M, MDS., Senior Lecturer and the workshop was concluded with awarding the Certificate of appreciations to the guest speakers and the Participants followed by National anthem.

Graduation Day Ceremony

The main convocation (graduation ceremony) of Vivekanandha Dental College for Women (VDCW) was held on 1st August 2022. Degrees were awarded to 10thbatch of Under graduate students by the Chief Guest Dr. Dibyendu Mazumdar, MDS, President, Dental Council of India.

As the graduates were eagerly waiting to take their degrees, the event started with the sound of trumpets blowing, welcoming the Chairman and Chief Guest.

The Graduation Ceremony began with academic procession in the order of Principal,Heads of the Department, Chairman & Secretary of Vivekanandha Education Institutions,Chief Guest and Director of VDCW.

The Welcome address was given by Dr M Sudhaa Mani MDS, Professor, Department of Oral Medicine.

The Chief Guest for the Convocation was Dr. Dibyendu Mazumdar, President, Dental Council of India. Dr. V.M. Mohammed Sagir MDS., PhD., Member, Dental Council of India was the special invitee. In addition, our college faculty members, parents, graduates were all presented in the auditorium.

The graduation day address was delivered by the Chief Guest Dr. Dibyendu Mazumdar. Special address was given by Dr V M Mohammed Sagir,in his address; he motivated the students not to forget their value systems and work ethics.

This was followed by the distribution of Certificate to the young graduates. This year 187 graduates were awarded with BDS degree and 39 Post graduates were awarded with MDS degree.Dr. Nagalakshmi, Vice Principal guided all the graduates to take the Professional Pledge.

The event was presided by our Honorable Chairman "Vidhya Rathna" Prof.Dr.M.Karunanithi., Vivekanandha Educational Institutions. The ceremony continued with the Principal Dr. N. Balan presenting the annual report of our College where he highlighted the institute’s performance and achievements of the Dental Students.

The Convocation ended with a vote of thanks by the Vice Principal, Dr. K. Balu, followed by the National Anthem.

Anti-ragging Workshop

Anti-ragging Workshop was conducted on 13th July 2022, in our A/C Auditorium of the Vivekanandha Dental College for Women. Dr.M.Sudhaa Mani M.D.S, welcomed the gathering. Dr.Vikas Jeph, M.D.S, DCI Member was the Chief Guest of the function.

Dr.M.C.Sainath, Dean, Madha Dental College, Chennai was the special invitee of the day.

Dr.VikasJeph addressed the students about the importance of ragging free atmosphere in the Educational Institution. Dr.(Capt.)S.Gokulanathan, Director and Dr.N.Balan, Principal explained the measures taken by the Institution to prevent ragging.

Mr.Thirumoorthi, M.A.,B.L., Advocate explained the legal consequence of ragging.Mr.K.Jayaraman, Parents representative appreciated the Institution for the various measures to curb ragging and maintain the campus ragging free continuously for the past 15 years.

Dr.S.Nagalakshmi, Vice Principal (Academics) administered Anti-Ragging pledge to the students of Vivekanandha Dental College for Women. The Workshop was over with the vote of thanks proposed by Dr.K.Balu, M.D.S, Vice Principal (Admin) followed by National Anthem.

NATIONAL DOCTOR'S DAY

“NATIONAL DOCTOR'S DAY” falls on July 1st every year. It was established as a way toexpress gratitude to the medical staff all over the country for their dedicated services. It is also a way to bring awareness to community so that people will know more about how to care for their overallhealth.

Details of Screening and awareness programme

As a part of the health professionals, we, fromVivekanandha Dental College for Women organized an Oral Health Awareness and Screening Camp atKongunadu Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Nallipalayam, Namakkal.A team of dentists, post graduate students and house surgeons from the multiple departments, Vivekanandha Dental College for Women conducted this program and following activities were carried out

• 1. Oral Hygiene Sessions, Health Talk was carried out by the faculty members and postgraduates for spreading awareness regarding oral health and physical health.
• 2. Oral screening and health education with Audio visual aids were used to create awareness pertaining to good oral habits, diet and general health.
• 3. Health education activity like innovativeskit and drama were conducted pertaining to general and oral habits and general knowledge.
• 4. Preventive Procedures: Schools authorities were priorly intimated to send their wards along with parents for check-up and treatment.
• 5. Brochure containing oral health instructions was also distributed.
• 6. The aim of this program was to encourage school students to adopt healthy habits for future. Thus, a video demonstrating brushing techniques for oral health care was demonstrated to the students.

Mr. Dhanasekaran, Manager, Canara Bank, Tiruchengode, has conducted a programmeon Educational Loan for the students of VDCW on 23rd June 2022 at College Auditorium.

He explained about the educational loan scheme which includes payment of Course fee, Hostel/Boarding/Examination/Library& Laboratory fees, and Purchase of books, equipments, instruments, uniforms, etc.,

He also stressed about Skill Loan Scheme which has been developed to support the national initiatives for skill development and usual Home loan, Vehicle loan and its benefits.

The White Coat wearing Ceremony

The White Coat Ceremony is an iconic ritual that emphasizes compassionate, collaborative, scientifically excellent care from the very first day of training in the healthcare profession. During the ceremony, students were decorated with white coat by their parents and the Hippocratic Oath is recited, signifying their entrance into the medical profession.

The ritual was conducted at our the college auditorium on 22nd June 2022. Dr N Balan, Principal, Vivekanandha Dental College preside over the function.

The ceremony included the presentation of a white coat and stethoscopeto each student.

For every new dental student, the White Coat Ceremony means a pride moment in their life. The students are encouraged for their achievement in their profession and talked about the commitment to serve for the society. They were advised to improve their knowledge in science and technology of medicine and also the human obligations of being a doctor.

International Day of Yoga

The International yoga day was celebrated on 21stJune to bring harmony, happiness, success, Physical and Mental fitness to every soul in the world. This was a great opportunity to imbibe the value of discipline. yoga is a mental, physical, and spiritual practice that need to be carried every day. This International Day of Yoga was celebrated at Vivekananadha Dental College for Women on 22nd June 2022 with 400 dental students in 4 sessions. Students were encouraged to perform Yoga and also explained about various benefits of yoga to maintain good health and better performance in education.

Students performed yoga at 10 am in the auditorium. There were many trained yoga volunteers who came forward and demonstrated several yoga asanas. Different yoga postures like

1. Surya Namaskaram: Students performed this asanas for 4 to 5 times in one minute. It will help in easing the stress and relaxing your whole body.

2.Trikonasana: 10 - 30 seconds for 3 to 6 times. It helps our body to relieve gastritis, indigestion, acidity and flatulence.

3.Padahatasana: Done for 15 – 30 seconds that improve the metabolism.

4.Parivttra tadasana: It should be done for 60 seconds which helps to boost energy in the body.

5.Virabhadrasana: These poses hold for up to 30 – 60 seconds that energizes tired limbs.

6.Tadasana: This pose holds up to 1 minute. Strengthen your back, hips, and legs.

7.Badhha konasana: This position is for up to 2 minutes. Strengthens and improves flexibility in the inner thighs, groins and the knees.

8.Padmasana: Done for 1- 5 minutes at a stretch.This asanahelps to relax the mind.

9.Bandha Padmasana:This position is for 1 minute that helps to stimulate digestion.

10.Bhujangasana: This was performed for 5 minutes that keeps our body fit and helathy.

Faculty Development Programme on E-Learning – (Google Suit)

The Faculty Development Programme on E- Learning with Google Suit, Google Classroom was conducted for the Faculty members of Vivekanandha Dental College for Women.Dr. A. Tamaraiselvi& Dr S Sinduja Assistant Professor, Department of Computer Science,Vivekanandha College of Engineering for Women delivered lecture on “Uses of Google Platform – Google Suit, classroom & form” on 20.06.2022 in our Seminar Hall through ICT tools. The Inaugural ceremony of Faculty Development Programme was conducted by our Principal Dr. N. Balan at 10.00 am. Dr. Nagalakshmi, Vice Principal,welcomed the gathering. Dr. Balu, Vice Principal, introduced the speaker.

Dr. A. Tamaraiselvi handled the topic “Introduction to Google Suit with class room”. She briefed about creation ofclass room, assignment of work, grading system of class rooms and the concept of ICT in Teaching & Learning mythologies.

Ms.S.Sinduja demonstrated on GoogleClass room in Google workspace for Education. She explained in detail about the addition of student, streaming of works and grades for the assessment in classroom.

There was an interactive session between speakers and the faculty memebers regarding E-learning tools.

STUDENT’S TALENT SHOW

A talent show is an event in which participants perform the arts of singing, dancing, acting, martial arts, poetry, comedy or other activities to exhibit their skills. Every person needs to search for the talent inside them and take it out to show the world.

To showcase the talent of students, a talent show was organized for the first-year batch students {2021-2026} of Vivekanandha Dental College for Women on 11.06.2022 at the college auditorium. The programme was conducted to give an opportunity to bring out their hiddentalents and also to build self-confidence. It was organized with consecutive event like alto singing and dancing events, congregation performances, poem recitation and awarding of photography and drawing skills thus making the event accomplished.

The programme started at 10:00 am and this ceremony was hosted by Ms.B. Harsha,Ms.R.Induja, Ms.Haripriya.J and Ms.Mowriya with salutation to all the dignitaries and juries, who bestowed the function.

The occasion started with classical dance performance byMs. Sivaranjini, Ms.B. Harsha, Ms. Haripriya.J to welcome the gathering.

Subsequently, solo-singing performance was done by Ms. Devadharshini, Ms. Ajeem Riswana, Ms. Dhivya, Ms. Pandiselvi and Ms. Nivekha.

This was followed with a group dance performance by Ms. Janushri Elmathi, Ms. Karthika, Ms. Kamali and Ms. Pandiselvi .

The next event was a group song performed by Ms. Dhivya, Ms. Dharshini and Ms.Vaishnavi.

A poem is composed with imaginative words and best way to express, share ideas, emotions of an individual poetically. That poetical emotions were recited by Ms. Jeevitha, Ms. Mahashree, Ms. Nivekha and Ms. Dharshini in both tamil and English.

This was followed with Semi-fusion dance and performed by Ms. Sreenithi, Ms. Ramani,Ms.Gowshika, Ms.Vaishnavi, Ms.Sonalika, Ms.Devadharshini, Ms.Dhanasubadharshini and Ms. Deepika.

The next event was an entice western dance performed byMs. Dharani, Ms. Hana Rafi, Ms. Youvashree, Ms. Preethi and Ms. Nivekha.

The mime is performed where the people can express this feeling and emotions through facial expression and body language. This art was performed by Ms. Riswana Farveen, Ms. Thanishga, Ms. Gurunisha, Ms. Sreedeepika, Ms. Keerthana, Ms. Kalaivani, Ms. Hima andMs. Shyamala.

The last event of the programme was photographic excellence show byMs. Haripriya.S, Ms. Gurunisha, Ms. Nivekha, Ms. Dharani and Ms. Rizwana Farveen, through the presentation with captured impressive photos and paintings.

A brief overview of syllabus and curriculum of CRRI students in the department of Oral Medicine and Radiology was presented. The faculties of the department had been introduced, a brief discussion of oral medicine and radiology & how the patient is allotted, examined, diagnosed and treated. An insight of case history, demonstration of clinical examination techniques, radiographic techniques and radiology to imagology was discussed. Good sterilization protocol & Personal protection during radiology were instructed to the students. The overall program was targeted to orient the students to department activities and to provoke high-order thinking skills

DEPARTMENT OF PERIODONTICS AND IMPLANTOLOGY, Dr. Vennila.K (MDS) –READER

The program commenced with brief outline and TN Dr MGR Medical University & DCI curriculum for CRRI students related to the Department of Periodontics. Explained about safety measures during pandemic period on sterilization protocols, instrumentation and dress code in the department. Equipment’s needed for clinical posting, log book, assignment note and their maintenance were clearly explained and also highlighted the Journal discussions, Seminars, the research activities and Short studies, clinical cases, poster and paper presentations carried out in the department.

DEPARTMENT OF ENDODONTICS AND CONSERVATIVE DENTISTRY, Dr.AJI MARKOSE, MDS,

The orientation program begins with the brief introduction about Endodontics and Conservative activities of CRRIs and Scopes related to it. Initially, we give instructions to the students regarding safety protocols, sterilization, seminar schedules for CRRIs, Books for reference for seminar topics and we will give list of Conservative and Endodontic instrument kit,model presentation of research article and model copy of RCT to be done in natural tooth and minimum work schedule given for CRRI in our department and finally students to take signature in log book from all the staff members.

DEPARTMENT OF ORAL AND MAXILLOFACIAL SURGERY, DR.DIVYA, MDS, Senior Lecturer,

The orientation begins with a brief introduction about Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Scope’s related to it. Vision and mission of the OMFS department and the organization’s structure was explained in a detailed manner. Faculty profile and governance, Interns work schedule, protocols followed in the department, dress code, overall responsibilities, casualty and ward visits, instrumentation, sterilization and disinfection control, safety regulations and duty hours wasclearly explained. Students were motivated to involve in research activities and to participate in the national and international conferences.

DEPARTMENT OF PEDODONTICS AND PREVENTIVE DENTISTRY, Dr.KAMATCHI M (MDS) SENIOR LECTURER

A brief introduction towards pedodontics was given, the goals, objective, scope of pediatric dentistry was elaborated. An introduction about the department staff members and their achievements was given. An overall description with photographs was show about the various departmental amenities (Play area, Conscious sedation units, Isolation room and minor OT rooms). The various extracurricular activities were also shown through photographs. The various academic schedule was explained to the students, the other academic activities like seminars, posters etc., encouraged in our department is also explained. The various textbooks recommend for the students were also mentioned, as well as the department and central library facilities were discussed. The overall program was done to help the students to get better acquainted with the department activities.

Department of Orthodontics & Dentofacial Orthopedics, Dr. K. Preethi MDS, Senior Lecturer

The Orientation lecture delivered was in accordance to the DCI guidelines to be followed in by the CRI during Department of Orthodontics. The lecture emphasized on the detailed diagnostic procedure, treatment planning and decision making on clinical cases, importance of patient handling, observe the etiological factors precipitating malocclusion like habits and also importance of maintaining clinical records like photographs, x-rays and study models. CRRI were insisted to design and deliver various appliance like myofunctional appliance, retainers, soldering TPA and to observe & assist various procedures done in the department eg ; bonding & banding procedure, extraoral anchorage appliances and TAD insertion etc. The interns were requested to show their enthusiastic involvement in their internship program with daily discussion, clinical test and encouraged to take up Short-Term Study

DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC HEALTH DENTISTRY, G. LALITHAMBIGAI (MDS) – READER

A brief overview on community outreach programs was given to the CRRIs, entailing how we, as dentists can reach various populations across the map. From PHCs to dental camps, a gist of every unique aspect of Public Health Dentistry was described in a comprehensible manner. Furthermore, emphasis was placed on CRRI schedule completion and the basic regulations of the department.

DEPARTMENT OF ORAL PATHOLOGY & MICROBIOLOGY

Dr. T. Maheswaran, Professor, Department of Oral Pathology & Microbiology, delivered the orientation lecture for the CRRI about the DCI guidelines and University regulations to be followed during internship. In his presentation he briefed about case history recording and clinical examination to be performed by the intern. Interns were advised to observe cytology smear preparation, basic haematology investigation, tissue processing, staining and histopathologic slide interpretation. He also encouraged the interns to actively participate in the discussion with the faculty about oral microbiology, recent advances in oral pathology, NEET-MDS Preparation, establishment of dental clinic, research and scientific publications.

Undergraduate orientation programme Vivekanandha Dental College for Women has conducted a UG – Second BDS (2021-22) Orientation programme on 5th May2022 at the College Seminar hall.

Introduction session - Second year staff in- charge

The programme commenced with a brief outline on syllabus and curriculum of final year department and students role during second year BDS was given by Dr. M. Saranya MDS., Associate Professor of Oral Pathology. She explained about safety measures during pandemic period and SOP inside the college campus. She emphasized on standard sterilization protocols, instrumentations and dress code in the department. She has also highlighted the research activities and research projectscarried out in the department and the examination pattern inboth theory and clinical. Finally, she advised the students on strict discipline, punctuality andmaintaining the protocol during clinical practice.

First session- Department of Prosthodontics

In the First session Dr. Ajay .R.,MDS.,Associate Professor, Department of Prosthodontics commenced the speech related to orientation and overview about the curriculum and syllabus in the subject Pre – clinical Prosthodontics and Dental materials to second year students. The students were instructed about their pre-clinical work and protocol that should be followed during their lab postings and they were also explained regarding the topics to be covered during lecture classes. A brief description about the department facilities like the working area, class roomand library were highlighted. Finally, he stressed about the basic concepts of Prosthodontics and its major role in dentistry

Second session- Department of General Pathology

In the second session Dr. M. Saranya MDS., Associate Professor of Oral Pathology , explained clearly about the role and responsibilities in the Department of General Pathology. She also explained in detail about work to be completed in the department as per the TN Dr MGR Medical University & DCI Norms, which included the lab work, hematology, urine analysis and histopathology slides, specimens and spotters. She encouraged them to involve in research activities, poster and paper presentation at variousconferences.

Third session- Department of Microbiology

Miss.K.Kiruthika., MSC., Lecturer, Department of Microbiology briefed the students about the second year curriculum including the syllabus and university examination pattern.The students were stressed about the need for attending all the internal assessment examinations. Students were instructed about the discipline to be maintained in the department and also the list of instruments to be brought to the department during clinical postings.A detailed overview about the department activities and the laboratory procedures performed in the department were explained.The students were briefed about the covid protocols to be practiced in the department of Microbiology.

Fourth session- Department of Pharmacology

Dr. Arul Raja.S.. Msc, Phd,Associate Professor, Department of Pharmacology explained about the aspects of Pharmacology. The faculties of the department with their respective role were also mentioned by him. The second year students were instructed about the discipline to be maintained in the department, about laboratory instruments to be brought, sterilization protocols to be followed, importance of personal protective measures and books to be referred. The students were briefed about course outcome. The importance of various medications used in dentistry was also emphasized. The syllabus and the curriculum for second year students and marks and exam pattern were discussed. Overall, the programme was targeted to orient the second year students about department activities and provoke good pharmacological knowledge.

Fifth session- Department of Conservative Dentistry

Dr. Chittrarasu, MDS, Associate Professor, from the Department of Conservative Dentistry & Endodontics delivered an orientation lecture about the Pre-clinical training to the second BDS students. He started the session by introducing all the teachers of the department.Then he explained about the infrastructure and other facilities of the department in detail with adequate phantom lab. He also stressed the student about basic discipline and decorum to be followed in the pre-clinics in detail. The work to be completed were listed. Equipments needed for the pre-clinical procedures, logbook, assignment notebook and their maintenance were explained. Cavity cutting quota, university exam syllabus and pattern were clearly explained with marks distribution. Finally, the prescribed textbooks and reference textbooks were enlisted to the students.

Finally, the programme concluded with vote of thanks by Dr. P.Tamil Thangam followed by with National anthem.

Undergraduate orientation programme I BDS

First year departments of Vivekanandha Dental College for Women have conducted a UG – I BDS (2021-22) Orientation programme on 30th April2022 at the College Seminar Hall.Student orientation programme plays an important role in a studentwho were transited from school to the college. This Orientation programmeswere aimed at familiarizing the students to an unknown campus environment, its faculties and infrastructure. It enables them to make essential connection with studies and develop network among other peers.

The first session of the orientation programme was by Dr.Subbhulakshmi Professor, Department of Anatomywho gave a brief introduction and outline of the BDS course including the facilities our Institution.She also explained about the infrastructure and other facilities of the department in detail with adequate photographs. She discussed about the teaching methodology like small group teaching, dissection of cadavers, demonstration, study of dissected specimens, study of histological slides, osteology, charts and models. She also stressed about the important of internal assessment examinations and the weightage in the University examination. The first-year curriculum including the syllabus, university exam pattern were clearly explained with the mark distribution. Finally, the prescribed textbooks and reference textbooks were enlisted to the students, as well as the department and central library facilities were discussed.

The next session was delivered by Dr. K. Tullanithi.,Professor in Department of Biochemistry. He stressed about importance of biochemistry in dentistry and he highlighted that the majority of dental students who will be entering to generalpractice and relatively few will be engaged in specialist practiceand research. He emphasized that a sound understanding of biochemistry is essentialfor all the dental students and he also stressed about essential requirement of dentistry where the students should have asound knowledge of chemistry, particularly polyfunctional andheterocyclic organic chemistry, together with an adequate understanding of biology and genetics.Finally, he directed the students on dress code, strict discipline, punctuality and maintaining the protocol during practical hours.

Dr. G. Purushothaman, Associate Professor, Department of Physiology who gave an orientation lecture about the role of Physiology in Dentistry to the I year BDS students. Initially he mentioned about the infrastructure of the Hematology labs and the instruments in the labs in detail with photographs. He also stressed about basic discipline and decorum that should be followed in the college and departments. University exam pattern &syllabus which combined with biochemistry were clearly explained with the mark distribution. Finally, the prescribed textbooks in physiology were also highlighted to the students.

The final presentation of programme was given byDr. J. Dinesh Shankar,MDS, Reader, Department of Oral pathology and microbiology. He addressed the newly joined first year under graduate dental students and directed them the way to excel in Pre-Clinical works. He also mentioned that the aim should not be just to get education but also to become good professional in the field of dentistry. This programme was created an opportunity to interact with the faculties of first year BDS departments holding important portfolios. The students were apprised about the college activities, academic calendar, state-of-the-art infrastructure that promotes a learning environment, scientific activities, sporting events along with the other extracurricular activities that contribute to the overall development of a student.

Effective Class V Restorations – An Evidence based approach Part I & II

Department of Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics, Vivekanandha Dental College for Women conducted a Continuing Dental Education programme on “EFFECTIVE CLASS V RESTORATIONS – An evidence based approach” on 7thApril 2022 at the College Auditorium via virtual mode. The programme was conducted to enhance our knowledge on class V restorations that are being done in our field. This academic event was scheduled for 8 hours and accredited with 5 Credit points by our esteemed Tamil Nadu Dental Council (TNDC Approval number: 150/22) with173 delegates participated in this Programme.

Updates on Oral Pathology

Department of Oral Pathology & Microbiology, Vivekanandha Dental College for women, has organized a Continuing Dental Education program entitled “UPDATES ON ORAL PATHOLOGY” on 6th April 2021. The CDE program was conducted with 5 credit points given by Tamil Nadu Dental Council (TNDC apvl No:145/22) and around 120 participants have attended the program.

Department of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopaedics, Vivekanandha Dental College for Women conducted a Continuing Dental Education Virtual Progamme on “Does Early Treatment Provides Stability or Not?” on the 4thApril 2022 at the college. The one day academic program was accredited with 3 CDE credit points by our Tamil Nadu State Dental Council (TNDC R.NO 147/22 ). Around 181 participants from various colleges took part in this event. The programme started with invoking the blessings of the Almighty, our soul inspirer at 10:30 am.

He elaborately discussed about the timing of treatment , when to treat the patients with various discrepancy and what was the ideal age for treating patients and to select appliance and its outcome , stability of the achieved goal is very important for long time sucess .

It was followed by a question & answer session in which the participants actively raised their doubts & questions and clarifications were given for the same.

The programme was an brain kindler to the undergraduates/postgraduates and practitioners which paved way for upbringing their understanding and skills in handling and treating the patients. The first session of the lecture series was between 10.30 am-12.00 pm, the speaker was Dr. OM PRAKASH YADAV. MDS., MSc., Research assistant, who delivered the lecture on the topic “(Challenges and Opportunities in Dentistry in North America)”. He gave brief description of about how to plan and get the job opportunities. It kindled interest in the budding under graduates and post graduates to make synthesis from available resources to get enormous job opportunities.

The second session of lecture series was between 1.00 pm - 2.00 pm, the speaker of this session was Dr.Lalithambigai, MDS, Reader. She delivered the lecture on the topic “(Women dentist: Changing the face of dentistry)”. She highlighted about basic Challenges faced by the women Dentist and the methods to overcome them, with a motivating authentic session.

The third session of lecture series was given by Dr. J. John Smith., MDS, Senior-Lecturer who delivered topic on “(Changing nature of career to clinical research physician)” between 2.30 pm-3.30 pm. He highlighted the need for Clinical research in practice and various challenges faced in daily dental practice. And also emphasized the advantages and disadvantages along with the universal guidelines that should be followed.

Departments of General Pathology, Microbiology & Pharmacology, Vivekanandha Dental College for Women has conducted a Continuing Dental Education programme on “BREAKBONE FEVER- DENGUE”on 29th March, 2022 at the College Auditorium. The programme wasconducted to enhance our knowledge on the Breakbone fever caused by the Dengue virus, the vector control and the management of the disease. This academic event was scheduled for 8 hours and accredited with 3 Credit points by our esteemed Tamilnadu Dental Council with 500 delegates participated in this Programme.

The first session of the lecture series was between 10.00 am -11.00 am, the speakerwas Dr. FABIAN DAVAMANI AMALRAJ, M.Sc., Ph.D.,Associate Professor, Biomedical sciences, School of Health Sciences, IMU, who delivered the lecture on the topic “Re-emerging Dengue virus- Can vector control help?”. He briefed on the re-emergence of the Dengue virus, its changing virulence nature and the risk factors alarming by them. He also described how the large-scale studies of patterns in dengue transmission can provide essential information to resist the disease, identify and diagnose dengue cases, and implement various vector control methods for the effective management of the disesase. The session gave a brief insight into the disease and the effective control measures.

The second session of the lecture series was between 11.00 am - 12.00 pm, the speaker of the session was Dr. VIJAY PANDIAN M, MD., Senior.Asst.Professor, Department of Community Medicine, Govt. ESI Medical College and Hospital, Coimbatore.He delivered the lecture on thetopic, “Beware of the bite- do's and don’ts to prevent Dengue”. He emphasized on the development of vaccines and immunotherapies which have introduced a new dimension for effective dengue control and prevention. He also added on the implementation of novel biotechnological interventions, such as sterile insect technique, paratransgenesis, and production of genetically modified vectors which has improved the efficacy of the traditional strategies.

The third session of lecture series was delivered by Dr. C. THANGAM, M.Sc., Ph.D.,Associate Professor & Head, Department of Pharmacology, K.S.R. Institute Dental Sciences and research, Tiruchengode, who spoke on the topic “Pharmacological Management of Dengue” between 1.30 pm-3.00 pm.The infected patients have to take good rest, drink plenty of fluids, and see your doctor, if the condition worsens in the first 24 hours after fever gone down, the patient has to be hospitalised immediately and has to be checked for complications. The best way to prevent the disease is to prevent bites by infected mosquitoes, particularly if you are living in or traveling to a tropical area.

Department of Prosthodontics and crown & bridge, Vivekanandha Dental College for Women has conducted a Continuing Dental Education Programme - “ZIRCONIA RESTORATIONS” on 18th March 2022 at the College Auditorium. The programme was conducted to enhance the knowledge on zirconia restoration that are being done in the field of Prosthodontic Dentistry. He gave brief description of about the topic and applications of Zirconia restorations in various clinical fields which enlightened our knowledge.

The second session was the laboratory demonstration of the zirconia restorations which held between 12.30 am -2.00 pm. The demonstrator of this session was Dr AKBAR ALI, M.D.S, MFDS RCPS. He demonstrated the CAD\ CAM designing and milling of the zirconia block. He highlighted the scanning of master cast, designing of the crown and milling of the zirconia crown from the block.

The third session of the lecture series was held between 2.00 pm & 3.30 pm. The speaker of this session was Dr V Devaki MDS, Prosfessor, Department of Prosthodontics and Crown & Bridge. She delivered lecture on topic “Metal Ceramic Vs All Ceramic Restorations”. She highlighted various advantage, disadvantages, indications, contraindications and survival rates of each restorations.

The programme was conducted to enhance our knowledge on current trends of protocols in maxillo-facial trauma that are being done in our field. This academic event was scheduled for 8 hours and accredited with 6 Credit points by our esteemed Tamilnadu Dental Council with 200 delegates participated in this Programme.

The first session of the lecture series was between 9.30 AM — 10.30 AM, the speaker was Dr. R. Narendar MDS, HOD, Dept of Oral and maxillofacial surgery, who delivered the lecture on the topic “Primary Assessment of Maxillo-facial trauma”. He gave brief description of Maxillofacial injuries are common in polytrauma patients, and spectrum can be minor to life-threatening injuries. Primary assessment and management can be very important. They can involve facial soft tissues, facial bones, or both. Maxillofacial injuries can be due to various causes including road traffic accidents, assaults, and fall from height, industrial injuries, animal bites, sports injuries, burns, and war injuries.

The second session of the lecture series was between 10.45 AM — 11. 45 AM, the speaker of this session was Dr Ramkumar MS General Surgeon SVMCH & RI, Tiruchengode He highlighted about General surgeon is the first person to assess the patient to identify the nature of traum. Maxillofacial is the prominent site of the human body, and this makes the region is prone to suffer from trauma .Low level of awareness among the population to wear a full-face helmet. Indonesian standard of the helmet with chin can reduce the number of maxillofacial injuries.

The third session of lecture series was delivered by Dr.YasmeenAhamed MDS Associate Professor Dept of Oral medicine. He highlighted the Injury to the face can occur to include the dentition or maxillofacial skeleton in isolation, or in combination with neck, multisystem, or cranial fractures . The causes of maxillofacial trauma are diverse and majority of them are due to motor vehicle accidents, falls and assaults. While our diagnostic capabilities for assessing and quantifying the effects of facial trauma have improved since the 1940s, the increasing complexity of involvement places additional demands to provide comprehensive assessment to assist in treatment planning of surgical repair

The fourth session of lecture series was delivered by Dr. Divyaa MDS Senior Lecturer Dept of Oral surgery, VDCW. She highlighted The incidence and epidemiological causes of maxillofacial (MF) trauma and facial fractures varies widely in different regions of the world due to social, economical, cultural consequences, awareness of traffic regulations and alcohol consumption. Reports from distinct regions also have different etiological findings

The second session of lecture series was in between 11.00 am-01.30 pm, the speakers of this session were Dr. Abhishek Soni, MDS, Chief paediatric dentist, Vanilla Smiles and Dr.Sanchit Paul, MDS, Chief paediatric dentist, Tooth Tales. They delivered the lecture on the topic “THE PEDIATRIC DENTAL SEDATION CONTINUUM:Do we have all the tools for our kids as a pediatric dentist?”. They gave a clear view regarding various routes of administration of various drugs that induce sedation. They used various audio-visual aids to keep the participants engaged.

The third session of lecture series was delivered by Dr.Mihir Shah, MDS,Chief paediatric dentist, Paediatric Smiles who delivered his lecture topic on “Orofacial Myotherapy” between 02.00pm- 03.30pm. He discussed in detail about the basic concepts of orofacial myotherapy and obstructive sleep apnea. He also gave a brief view on the ideal postures and exercises for the treatment for orofacial myofunctional disorders.

Updates on Oral Pathology

Department of Oral Pathology & Microbiology, Vivekanandha Dental College for women, has organized a Continuing Dental Education program entitled “UPDATES ON ORAL PATHOLOGY” on 21thFebruary2021. This program was a package of recent updates on pigmented lesions , reading hematological report and adjunctive diagnostic aids. The CDE program was conducted withprior approval of 5 credit points by our Tamil Nadu Dental Council, in which 121 participants have attended the program.

The program began at 09:30 am with registration of the participants, prayer song and lighting of lamp. The program was hosted by postgraduate student Dr.G.Nithiyasri.

Welcome address was delivered by Dr.V.Ilayaraja, MDS, Professor, Vivekanandha Dental College for women at 09:45 to 10:000 am.

The first lecture of the session was presented byDr.AbikshyeetPandaMDS, Professor, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology. Kalinga Institute of Dental Sciences, has given the first lecture on topic “Pigmented lesions – an enigma ” between 10:00 am to 11:30 am. His explanation on clinical features of various pigmented lesions like melanoma , melanocytic nevus ,seborrhic keratosis , café au lait pigmentations, actinic lentigo were really informative. Hisexplanation gave minute details on various features that benefitted the participants for diagnosing various pigmented lesions .

The second guest speaker was introduced by DrJ.DineshShankarMDS, Professor, Vivekanandha Dental College for women.

The second lecture of the session was given Dr.Mohan Kumar K PMDS , PGDFAO., Professor, Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology and Microbiology. College of Dental sciences, Davangere, between 11:30 to 01:00 pm on Reading a Blood Report – A Dentist’s perspective . His guest lecture have thrown light on the importance of reading a hematological reportand its clinical implicatons. His explanation on the topics like erythrocyte sedimentation rate , defferential leucocyte count , estimating bleeding time , clotting time , prothrombin time were really informative.

Following second lecture there was a lunch break between 1:00 to 02:00pm.Third guest speaker was introduced by Dr.T.R.Yoithapprabhunath MDS,Professor, Vivekanandha Dental College for women.

The third lectureof the session was presented by Dr. Anitha Krishnan Pandarathodiyil MDS , MSc (Exptl Oral Pathology, UK) Associate Professor, Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, SEGi University, Malaysia ,between 02:00 to 03:30 pm on Adjunctive Diagnostic Techniques as Screening Tools for Oral Premalignant & Malignant Conditions. The lecture on importance of early detection ofa oral premalignant and malignant conditions reveals the various adjunctive methods like vital staining , oral cytology , and a various light detection systems.

Orthodontics for the Dental Practitioner

Department of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopaedics, Vivekanandha Dental College for Women conducted a Continuing Dental Education Virtual Orthodontics for the Dental Practitioner 18th February 2022 at the college. The one day academic program was accredited with 5 CDE credit points by our Tamil Nadu State Dental Council (TNDC R.NO 43/22 ). Around 242 participants from various colleges took part in this event.

The programme started with invoking the blessings of the Almighty, our soul inspirer at 9:30 am. Welcome address and Guest speaker was introduced by Prof. Dr. S.Nagalakshmi M.D.S., Head of Department of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopaedics, Vivekanandha Dental College for Women.

The First session was on the orated by Dr. M.M.Varadharaja M.D.S., Professor and Head, Department of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopaedics, CSI College of Dental Sciences & Research, Madurai. He elaborately discussed when to treat the patients and what was the ideal age for treating patients with various discrepancy and to select appliance type and its outcome of the treatment. It was followed by a question & answer session in which the participants actively raised their doubts & questions and clarifications were given for the same.

The second session was delivered by Prof Dr. Syed Khalid Altaf M.D.S., Department of Orthodontics, Vivekanandha Dental College for Women on the topic of He explained in detail, the various aspects regarding diagnosis and treatment planning in orthodontics and stages where to intercept the orthodontic treatment. The participants actively raised question and was clarified by the speaker in the following Q & A session.

The morning session ended with the question & answer session followed by Lunch Break.

The Third speaker was Dr.S.Revathi M.D.S., Senior Lecturer, Department of Orthodontics, Vivekanandha Dental College for Women on Self correcting anomalies in primary, mixed and permanent dentition period and not to intercept those anomalies. The session ended by question & answer.

The programme was an brain kindler to the undergraduates and the postgraduates which paved way for upbringing their understanding and skills in handling and treating the patients. The CDE program on Orthodontics for the Dental Practioner received a valuable feedback from the delegates and enthusiastic participation of students from various colleges. Continuing Dental Education programme –Physiology Lecture Series

Department of Physiology, Vivekanandha Dental College for Women has conducted a Continuing Dental Education programme, Physiology Lecture Series on “Cardiovascular System - CVS” on16thDecember 2021at the College Auditoriumvia virtual mode. The programme was conducted to provide information about Cardiovascular system (CVS) from various college experienced professor to share their knowledge and additional information to the exam going students and for the new joined fresher students from various specialties.

The programme began with the formal Inaugural function and introduction of guest speaker at 09.15 AM. The Welcome address was delivered by Dr. G. Purushothaman,Reader cum CDE convenor of VDCW. Our I BDS students Ms. Fameedha and Ms. Sareeka hosted the programme.

The first session of the CDE programme was in between 9.30AM -10.30 AM, the speaker was Dr. M. Suresh.,M.Sc., Ph.D., HOD of Physiology, Sri Ramakrishna Dental College & Hospital Coimbatorewho delivered his lecture on “Overview on CVS”. He gave brief description on over view of CVS. He explained basics of Cardiovascular system which relates to anatomical view and supplies of CVS.

The second speaker of the day wasDr. M. Mukilan., BDS., MSc, PhD., Professor& HOD of Physiology,KSR Institute of Dental Science and Research, Tiruchengode who delivered her lecture on “Cardiac Cycle & Heart Sounds”. Heexplained in detail about mechanical event of Cardiac Cycle. He also mentioned about Human cardiovascular system, organ system that conveys blood through vessels to and from all parts of the body, which also carrying nutrients and oxygen to tissues and removing carbon dioxide and other wastes.

Dr.G.Purushothaman.,MSc.,M.Phil., PhD., Reader, Department of Physiology,Vivekanandha Dental College for Women,who delivered her lecture on “Electrocardiogram (ECG)”. He started the session by giving specific term and definitions that used in ECG and he explained in detail about electrical activity of the heart that related to mechanical event of cardiac cycle. He also explained the basic principles of ECG and how it can be used in diagnostic purposes with picturization.

Dr. R. Gayatri Devi., MSc., PhD., Associate Professor, Department of Physiology, Saveetha Dental College and Hospital, Chennai who delivered her lecture topic on “Cardiac output”. Sheexplained about the basic anatomy and physiology of the cardiovascular system, followed by the methods of assessment of cardiovascular function. Cardiac cycle event is determined quantitatively with the volume called Cardiac Output. She briefed the mechanical event with measuring technics and she added few point which relets to the applied aspects of Cardiac Cycle.

Post lunch session was started with the presentation of Dr.G. Sathyanarayanan., MSc., PhD.,Assistant Professor, Department of Physiology,Dr. ALM PG IBMS, UNOM, Chennai. He presented his topic on “Blood Pressure & Hypertension”. Cardiovascular disease is a major public health concern in this modern world, and its associated morbidity can severely impair the functionality and quality of life of affected individuals.He stressed more detailed about Clinical aspect of Blood pressure.

The last session of the day was byDr. G. Gajalakshmi MSc., PhD.,HOD of Physiology,Asan Memorial Dental College and Hospitals, Chengalpet. She delivered her lecture on “Coronary circulation & Shock”.She explained in detail about Coronary artery disease and conduction abnormalities. She also stressed about most common signs and symptoms associated with cardiac anomalies.

Role of Oral Surgeon’s in Oral Cancer Prevention and Diagnosis

Department of oral and maxillofacial surgery, Vivekanandha Dental College for Women has conducted a Continuing Dental Education programme on 11.02.2022 at our college campus. This programme was organised with the concept of enhancing basic knowledge about Oral cancer to Dental Surgeon.

Department of Prosthodontics and crown & bridge, Vivekanandha Dental College for Women has conducted a Continuing Dental Education Programme - “GUIDED BONE REGENERATION” on 9th February 2022 at the College Auditorium. The programme was conducted to enhance the knowledge on guided bone regeneration that are being done in the field of Implant Dentistry. This academic event was scheduled for 5 hours and accredited with 5 Credit points by our esteemed Tamilnadu Dental Council and nearly 250 delegates were participated in this programme.

The programme was begin with the formal Inaugural function at 9.45 - 10.00 am. The Welcome address was delivered by Dr V Pon Jayanthi MDS. Introduction of the Guest speaker was done by Dr V Pon Jayanthi MDS, Senior Lecturer.

The first session of the lecture series was between 10.00 to 11.45 am, the speaker Dr Manikandan, MDS, delivered the lecture on the topic “GUIDED BONE REGENERATION”.

He gave brief description of about the topic and applications of guided bone regeneration in various clinical fields which enlightened our knowledge.

The second session of the lecture series was between 11.45 am -1.00 pm. The speaker of this session was Dr V Lalitha Manohari MDS, Senior Lecturer, Department of Prosthodontics and Crown & Bridge. She delivered lecture on the topic “IMMEDIATE IMPLANT LOADING”. She highlighted the advantages, disadvantages, indications and contraindications and application of immediate implant loading.

The third session of the lecture series was held between 1.00 pm & 2.15 pm. The speaker of this session was Dr P Arun Kumar MDS, Department of Prosthodontics and Crown & Bridge. He delivered lecture on topic “FAILURES IN IMPLANTS”. He highlighted various causes for failure of implants.

Finally, the vote of thanks was given by Dr S Suganya, MDS, and the CDE programme was concluded with awarding the certificate of appreciations to the guest speaker.

Covid To Omicron-Need of the Hour

Departments of General Pathology, Microbiology & Pharmacology, Vivekanandha Dental College for Women has conducted a Continuing Dental Education programme on “COVID TO OMICRON-NEED OF THE HOUR” on 8th February 2022 at the College Auditorium. He delivered the lecture on thetopic “Pathophysiology of COVID- the current trends”. He highlighted about pathophysiology ofCOVIDand how onecan research into the pathogenesis of COVID & OMICRON.

The third session of lecture series was delivered by Dr. R. Saravanan M.Sc., Ph.D., Department of Pharmacology, RVS Dental college, Coimbatore, who spoke on the topic “Potential drug targets in SARS-COV 2” between 1.30 pm-3.00 pm. He highlighted the need for preventive measures in the current COVID scenario and various drug targets in SARS-COV 2.

Department of Oral Medicine & Radiology, Vivekanandha Dental College for Women has conducted a Continuing Dental Education programme on “ALTERNATE MEDICINE IN ORAL MUCOSAL LESIONS” on 7thfebruary 2022 at the College Auditorium. The second session of lecture series was given by Dr. S. VANDANA MDS, Ph.D., who delivered her topic on “Applications of alternate medicine for oral mucosal lesions” between 2.00PM – 3.30PM. She highlighted about how the organic products like aloe vera, turmeric, ginger, propolis, chamomile, tea tree oil, garlic, ashwagandha, pomegranate are used as the alternate medicine for oral mucosal lesions.

World Cancer Day Program

Department of Public Health Dentistry, Vivekanandha Dental College for Women has conducted World Cancer Day programme on 4th February 2022 at the College Auditorium.The programme was conducted to enhance the knowledge on oral cancer and screening procedures that are being done in the field of Cancer Prevention and Research.

The speaker for the first session, Dr. G. Lalithambigai, MDS., Reader was introduced and welcomed by Dr. Shanmathi. S, Post-graduate. She delivered the lecture on “Introduction- Prevalence, Epidemiology of Cancer”. She gave a brief description on oral cancer, screening procedures and the current cancer scenario in India.

She also discussed about the risk factors of cancer, early detection and prevention, and regulatory approaches of tobacco control in India.

Dr.Pavithra.M,Post-graduateintroduced and welcomedthe second session of the programme was by , was by.Dr. Ambiga, MDS, Reader, Department of Oral Medicine and Radiology, VDCW She delivered the lecture on the topic “Diagnosis of Oral Cancer and Awareness on Breast and Cervical Cancer”. She highlighted about basic procedures diagnosis of oral cancer and treatment modalities at screeningl evel.She also emphasized on the prevention of Breast and Cervical cancer.

The third session of the lecture series was between 12.00 pm & 1.00 pm.The speaker of this session was Dr Rajkumar Daniel MDS, Professor, Department of Periodontology & Implantology. He delivered lecture on topic “APPLICATION OF PLATELET CONCENTRATES IN VARIOUS FIELDS” . He highlighted vast uses of PRF in different fields.

The fourth session of lecture was between 2.00 pm – 3.00 pm, the speaker of this session was Dr. Vennila MDS, Reader. She delivered lecture on the topic “Soft Tissue Augmentation”. She highlighted about various grafting materials and types of PRF and its applications in surgical aspects.

The fifth session of lecture series was Dr. E Gayathri MDS, Reader who delivered topic on “platelet rich fibrin application in hard tissue augmentation” between 3.00 pm- 4.00 pm. She highlighted the vertical and horizontal ridgeaugmentation and role of PRF in hard tissue augmentation in case reports have been discussed.

The sixth session of lecture series was queries discussion between 4.00pm -4.15 pm done by Dr Elanchezhiyan , MDS, Professor & HOD & Dr. Anirban Chatterjee MDS ,President Indian Society of Periodontology & he gave evident answers from his immense knowledge regarding the queries.

UG Orientation Programme Final BDS

Undergraduate orientation programme Vivekanandha Dental College for Women has conducted a UG – Final BDS (2022-23) Orientation programme on 11thJanuary2022 at the College Auditorium.The programme commenced with a brief outline on syllabus and curriculum of final year department and students role during final year BDS by Dr. V. Devaki MDS., Professor of Prosthodontics. She explained about clinical scenario in the Department ofProsthodontics and the responsibilities of the students during their posting.She also stressed about safety measures during pandemic period and SOP in patient handling. She emphasized on standard sterilization protocols, instrumentations and dress code in the department. She has also highlighted the research activities and research projectscarried out in the department and the examination pattern inboth theory and clinical. Finally, she advised the students on strict discipline, punctuality andmaintaining the protocol during clinical practice.

In the second session Dr. Gayathri Priyadharshini.,MDS.,Associate Professor, Department of Periodontologycommenced the speech related to orientation and overview about the curriculum and syllabus in the subject periodontics to final year students who are entering their final year. The students were instructed about their clinical work and protocol that should be followed during their clinical postings and they were also explained regarding the topics to be covered during lecture classes. A brief description about the department facilities like the working area, class roomand library were highlighted. Finally, she stressed about the basic concepts of periodontology and its major role in maintaining a good oral hygiene.

Dr. B.K. Rajkumar., MDS, Professor of Department of Orthodontics & Dentofacial Orthodontics explained clearly about the role and responsibilities in the Orthodonticsdepartment. He also explained in detail about work tobe completed in the department as per the TN Dr MGR Medical University & DCI Norms, which included the lab work, model analysis, cephalometric analysis and clinical work including patient case history& removable appliance, fabrication and insertion. He encouraged them to involve in research activities, poster and paper presentation at variousconferences.

Dr. John smith J., MDS.,Senior lecturer, Department of Public Health Dentistry, delivered a gist of the entire curriculum related to Public Health Dentistry to the final year students. In his presentation, curriculum-based studies which included case history& indices, adopting a village & Public Health Center, visit to primary health centre, visit to water treatment plant, preventive procedures like pit and fissure sealants, atraumatic restorative treatment and fluoride application and research activities were highlighted. He mentioned about the school dental health programme and public awareness camps.

Dr. Vinodh. S., MDS., Professor, Department of Pedodontics and Preventive Dentistryelaborated a brief introduction about the goals, objective, scope of pediatric dentistry. An introduction about the department staff members and their achievements was given. An overall description about the infrastructurelike Play area, Conscious sedation units, Isolation room and minor OT rooms and Central Library. The various academic schedule, clinical, preclinical requirement and examination pattern was also explained to the students. The list of textbooks recommended by the DCI & University was shown to the students.

Dr. Ambiga P. MDS,Associate Professor, Department of oral medicine and radiology explained about the aspects of oral medicine and radiology. The faculties of the department with their respective role were also mentioned by her. The final year students were instructed about the discipline to be maintained in the department, about diagnostic instruments to be brought, sterilization protocols to be followed, importance of personal protective measures and books to be referred. The students were briefed about case history, investigations, establishing the diagnosis and the treatment plan. The importance of techniques used and interpretation of intraoral and extraoral radiographs and advanced imaging in establishing the diagnosis was also emphasized. The syllabus and the curriculum for final year students and marks and exam pattern were discussed. Overall, the programme was targeted to orient the final year students about department activities and provoke good diagnostic skills.

Dr. J. Saravana Priyan Soundappan, Associate Professor, from the Department of Conservative Dentistry & Endodontics delivered an orientation lecture about the clinical training to the final BDS students. He started the session by introducing all the teachers of the department.Then he explained about the infrastructure and other facilities of the department in detail with adequate photographs. He also stressed the student about basic discipline and decorum to be followed in the clinics in detail. The treatment services provided were listed. Equipments needed for the clinical procedures, clinical logbook, assignment notebook and their maintenance were explained. Clinical case quota, university exam syllabus and pattern were clearly explained with the marks distribution. Finally, the prescribed textbooks and reference textbooks were enlisted to the students.

Dr.R.Narendar., MDS., Professor, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial surgery briefed the students about the final year curriculum including the syllabus and university examination pattern.The students were stressed about the need for attending all the internal assessment examinations. Students were instructed about the discipline to be maintained in the department and also the list of instruments to be brought to the department during clinical postings.A detailed overview about the department activities and the treatment procedures performed in the department were explained.The students were briefed about the covid protocols to be practiced in the department of oral and maxillofacial surgery.

Dr. Balu, Vice Principal, Academic, VDCW stressed about consistent progressin the field of Dentistry. He also advised the studentsabout good quality education,clinical skill and their role in dental patient care and also highlighted about increasing role of technology in the field of dentistry. He also stressed the students to upgrade themselves to become a very successful Dentist.

Dr. Nagalakshmi, Vice Principal of Administration, VDCW advised the students to maintain discipline and decorum in the clinics. She also stressed on discipline, hard work and compassion. She advised the students that the aim should not be just to get education but also to become a good professional in the field of dentistry.

UG Orientation Programme III BDS

Vivekanandha Dental College for Women has conducted a UG – III BDS (2022-23) Orientation programme on 7th January 2022 at the College Auditorium.The programmestarted with a brief introduction on syllabus and curriculum for the students by Dr. Vennila.K., MDS., Associate Professor, Department of Periodontics and Implantology. She also explained about Infection control and sterilization procedures during Clinicals which included a brief description of clinical and practical work. She also highlighted about research work carried in the department, library facilities, awards & honors received by the students.

The next session was deliberated by Dr. R. Ajay MDS, Ph.D., Associate professor in Department of Prosthodontics and Crown & Bridge. He acclimatized the students to the clinical scenario in the department through his presentation. He also mentioned the safety precautions and other etiquettes to be followed and it was elucidated. Examination pattern and clinical exercises along with pre-clinical assignments were explicated. Additionally, he explained the Sterilization protocols, instrumentations and dress code in the Clinics. He also stressed the students’ role in the research activities, the importance of participation in the research projects. He also mentioned the importance of dental materials and their role in the specialty clinics.

Dr.J.S.Sivakumar., MDS., Associate Professor, from the Department of Conservative Dentistry & Endodontics gave an orientation lecture about the clinical training to the III year B.D.S students. Initially he introduced all the Teaching Staff, then he explained about the infrastructure of the department in detail with adequate photographs. He also mentioned about the faculties of the department, and patient allotment, examination, diagnostic procedure. An insight of case history, demonstration of clinical examination techniques, radiographic techniques and radiology to imaging technology was also highlighted. The overall program was targeted to orient the students to department activities and to provoke high-order thinking skills.

Dr. S. P. IndraKumar MDS, Associate Professor from department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery has commenced the speech related to orientation and overview about the curriculum and syllabus to third year students entering the clinical year. The students wereexplained about their clinical work and protocol to be followed during their clinical postings. They were also explained regarding the topics to be covered during lecture classes. A brief description about our department facilities like Working Area,Library, Minor OT, Bio Medical Waste Disposal,Sterilization and Management protocols was given. This lecture was presented in an aim to understand the concepts of oral and maxillofacial surgery and to improve their skills in surgical aspects in Clinicals.

Dr. Manoharan. M., MDS.,Associate Professor, Department of Pedodontics and Preventive Dentistry has given introduction towards pedodontics which includes the goals, objective, scope of pediatric dentistry. He also introduction about the department staff members and their achievementswith photographs of departmental facilitieslike Children play area, Conscious sedation units, Isolation room and minor OT rooms. The various academic schedule was explained to the students, the various clinical and preclinical quota and examination pattern was informed to the students. The various textbooks recommended for the students were also mentioned, as well as the department and central library facilities were discussed. The overall program was done to help the students to get better acquainted with the department activities.

Dr S.Vinoth., MDS., Associate professor, Department of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedicshad given the general instruction & disciplinary code for3rd BDS students during the course in the department.He also elaborated the achievements and awards received by the dept faculties, and facilities available in department and he explained about preclinical exercises and clinical quota for students. He also explained about theory and clinical split-up marks for university exams.

Dr. Lalithambigai Gunasekaran., MDS.,Associate Professor of Public Health Dentistry who talked on overview of the syllabus and curriculum of third-year students in the Department of Public Health Dentistry. A brief description of their clinical and practical work and the agenda of how it is carried out was elaborated deliberately. Research work carried in the department, library facilities, awards received by the students was also discussed. An insight on the basics of the outreach programs, and how it’s done is delivered to the students. The overall program was targeted to orient the students to department activities and to provoke high-order thinking skills.

The programme was continued with the presentation of Dr. T.R. YoithapPrabhunath., MDS.,Associate Professor, Department of Oral Pathology, on “Oral Pathology in 3rd year curriculum”. He introduced the faculty, facilities and achievements of the department. He enlightened the purpose and how the subject Oral Pathology will be beneficial in future dental practice. He stressed that Oral Pathology will create a great opportunity to conceptualize our ideas, knowledge and experience into research for the betterment of the people. Theory syllabus and practical exercise has been briefed. Finally, he concluded the presentation by mentioning, “today’s hard work is tomorrow’s success”.

The final presentation of programme was given by Dr. Jesudasan, Department ofGeneral medicine. He highlighted about medical science departmentsMedicine and Surgery who are dealing with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases. He also stressed about clinical students in medical field and their role in the management of patients with illness. He also highlighted about student basic clinical learning part and basic knowledge of clinical examination, diagnosis and medical & surgical treatment planning of organ diseases are given to 3rd years BDS students in these departments. Finally, he concluded his presentation with advice to the student “For better clinical exposure to the students, you should dedication for learningin clinicalswith all the medical and dental departments.

PG Orientation Programme

Vivekanandha Dental College for Women has conducted a PG Orientation programme on 4th January 2022 at the College Auditorium.

Dr. Nagalakshmi, Prof and HOD of Orthodonticsaddressed the newly joined post graduate dental students and she directed them the way to excel in Clinical world is discipline, hard work and compassion. She also mentioned that the aim should not be just to get education but also to become good professional in the field of dentistry. This programme was created an opportunity to interact with the Heads of various Departments and Staff Members holding important portfolios. The students were apprised about the college activities, academic calendar, state-of-the-art infrastructure that promotes a learning environment, scientific activities, sporting events along with the other extracurricular activities that contribute to the overall development of a student.

Dr. Girish R Shavi., MDS., Professor and HOD of Public Health Dentistry explained about library dissertation, short study, and main dissertationtopic which will be given to the first year post graduate student. This includes on writing and structuring of library-dissertation; Contents to be included in a library-dissertation; topic selection, feasibility, submission and various other procedures of library dissertation, short study, and main dissertation.

The next presentation of the programme was given by Dr. Mahesh Mathian., MDS., Prof and HOD of Pedodontics. In his presentation, he highlighted the importance of preclinical exercises. Impact of preclinical training to excel in Clinical work was also stressed.Department wise clinical requirements for the entire MDS course was discussed and was advised to finish preclinical exercises early and take up clinical cases.

It was continued with the presentation of Dr. Sudhamani., MDS., Prof and HOD of Oral Medicine on “How to prepare and present a research paper”. She enlightenedthe purpose of seminar and how to make it simpler and more modest. She stressed that seminar is a great opportunity to share our ideas, knowledge and experience with other people. Especially in Public speaking can be daunting, but practice and preparation can minimize many of these anxieties. Finally, she concludes her presentation by mentioning few key points that helps to improve and give out best in seminar& workshops.

Dr. T. Maheswaran., MDS., Professor, Oral Pathology presented his topic about Journal Club. He introduced the topic with history and various terminologies. The aim, format and the process of conducting Journal Club was elaborated with examples. Pertinent DCI regulations of journal club was highlighted. He also discussed about critical appraisal of published articles.

The next presentation of the programme was given by Dr. K. Balu. MDS., Prof and HOD of Prosthodontics, on Case presentation and discussion. He Stressed that Clinical experience is important in dental education, the curriculum of a discussion-based learning class for dental education is more effect in dental chairs.

This was followed by Dr. Elanchezian. MDS., Prof and HOD of Periodontics on PG Convention/Conference/CDE programme. He gave a detailed description about scientific conferences, convention, workshops, symposium, CDE programs and publications. He also explained in detail about presentation on scientific paper and poster presentation in national and international conferences. Finally, he explained about publications which are enlightened with indexing, citations and impact factor.

Dr.A.Andamuthu Sivakumar. MDS., Professor & HOD of Conservative Dentistry & Endodontics, had briefed about the Scheme of examination to the students. He mentioned about exam pattern for both theory and clinical examination, time durationand marks distribution. In addition, the mode of preparation and guidance for the appearance of examination was given as a motivation for their post graduate program.

The final presentation of the programme was by Dr. S. Shankar. MDS., PhD.,Associate Professor, Department of Public Health Dentistry. He mentioned about overview on community outreach program entails where and how a dentistcan approach and reach various populations from PHCs to camps which includes inter departmental staffs and students. He also highlighted about outreach programs and active participation and uses in conduction camps. He also mentioned about celebration of important Dental Health oriented programmes like Oral Hygiene Day, Dentist Day, World Cancer Day etc.,
